Convert JPEG to ST Compatible?

Recommended Posts

Depending on the size of the image your ST should be capable of viewing a JPEG. Programs like Imagecopy have been able to do it since the 90s, the main problem is memory. Even 4mb is not enough to display a large JPEG file sadly. I would probably use a modern program on PC/ Mac to reduce the size/ quality of the image and then swap it across. XN View has a extension called N-Convert, which allows you to save in ST formats (it even amazingly has an Atari ST version - although that version hasn't been updated for a long time).

There are at least 2 PC programs that you can use:

https://www.xnview.com/en/

http://grafx2.tk

Both have at least export to .PI1 (and maybe .NEO) format, so you get 320x200x16 colours output.

If you want something more sophisticated (i.e. more colours on-screen) you could use something like PhotoChrome (http://www.leonik.net/dml/sec_pcs.py). Versions 5 and onwards are command line and work on both PC and ST, while earlier versions worked on the ST directly.

Is there any halfway easy way to take jpeg image that I have and convert it to a format that my 1040ST would be able to open and display?  Would love to drag and drop it into my Ultrasatan.

Thanks!

there are @AnimaInCorpore online tools where you can convert jpg to a different Atari formats:

I downloaded xnview but it doesn't have .PI1 nor .NEO as options.  I'm using a Mac. Maybe those options aren't availabe on Mac specifically?

I'll try grafx2 next..

Forgot to say: There is a setting that you have to enable to be able to save in all formats. But anyway, Maybe @AnimaInCorpore's tools suit your needs better...

Depends what pixel art packages you have. If you have Deluxe Paint for the ST you can resize and convert them to 320x200 16 colour images and save them to IFF on things like Photoshop and Paintshop Pro etc.

I would let a modern PC package convert them to 16 colours myself personally. Best I have seen is a JAVA based app called HAMconvert which will do all sorts of image types for different machines and save them to IFF. It does a better job than even Photoshop 8.0 actually.

Well, I made a bunch of .PI1 files in that online drag and drop one.  Now I am having trouble getting them to show on my ST!

I'm using "Pick-a-pic" and it displays the image but then blocks the image with a prompt asking me if I want to view more. lol

you can check your PI1/2/3 files on my website, just drag'n'drop them: http://260ste.atari.org/

Thanks but what I'm trying to do is to get them to display on my ST.

yep, but that tool allows you to verify easily whether they were converted correctly

What is the standard image viewer to us on an ST to simply open pics and look thru them?

e.g. Gem-View

more you can find there:

There's also a ST program called Speed of Light that lets you view JPEGs using flickering & dithering techniques.  That's good if you just want to view a picture by double clicking it on the desktop.

I used that to look at the GIFs & JPEGs I downloaded off the 90's internet in full color, and also for conversion to other ST formats.

If you want to display the pics on the ST in as many colors as possible, look at Photochrome,  it can render pics with thousands of colors and looks quite nice,  you will have to convert the images to a format photochrome supports first,  like GIF or TGA and a few others.   Many PC tools can save in those formats.

ok, it works.

I've checked the latest XnView and I see that it still doesn't save the STE 12bit color palette and truncate it to 9bit.

True, but most palette downsampling programs are quite bad. PhotoChrome does a very good job at this. If you use other programs (Paint Shop Pro 7/8, XnView, Grafx) it's always a good idea to touch the palette up by hand. Or, even better, have a graphics artist do this :).

If you have some experience with compiling console apps on Mac, you can try my https://github.com/mikrosk/uconvert.

It supports plethora of formats and contains a viewer, too. And of course, there's  dithering options, export to STE palette etc. You can get pretty decent results with it.

Is there a public key for this? The version I have will only allow 4 file accesses before you are forced to exit and restart it.

Thanks.

I am using this site (http://atari.anides.de/) to convert an image to Atari ST formats. It looks like I can save the picture as a PI1 file. Is there any way, instead, to save it as something self-executable? I have a GOEX and if I could save the image as a disk image that I could just run on the ST, that would be great. If not, what program loads a PI1 file, Degas? It's been decades since I've actually run anything other than a game. I don't know how to get the PI1 file from my PC onto a disk image on the SD card for the Goex. Any help would be appreciated!

You can use one of the many slideshow programs available. https://www.atariuptodate.de/en/image/ under "slideshow" has quite a few different programs for you. The "classic" program people used is https://www.atariuptodate.de/en/10914/degas-elite-picture-show but I'm sure there are much fancier ones there. Just have a look and find the one you prefer.
