VCS adapter kaput! Won't work on 5200 - just tried her today

I was on the 2600 forums raving about how good some of those games are on her and after my last post there I felt enticed to fire up my 5200 with the 2600 adapter in place, I was gonna play Galagon and maybe Qyx on her, except one thing....

 

No picture.

 

Now at first I checked all of my connections, that wasn't it, as the 5200 games all played on my Atarimax. So I tried to once again fire her up with the 2600 adapter in place, no go!

 

Is there an issue with the adapter, because it DID work a couple of months ago the last time I fired her up. Maybe my VCS adapter is dead, it may be time to get a real 2600 instead, as the Flashback 9 won't play certain (Champ Games ARM-based) games on her, what do you think? Which would be more economically sound? I don't have a lotta cash right now so what would be the best bet when it comes to the 2600 department?

It's probably the adapter.  They're basically a 2600 inside, so have some of the same weaknesses, but are just different enough that they have their own peculiarities.

Possibly.  Are any other symptoms beyond the blank screen showing when it's connected, and is the 5200 working normally?

 

See if you can get it to play blind.  Pac-Man is good for this, since it can be started by just pressing the fire button and immediately makes sounds.  If it's at least generating sound, the TIA is possibly OK.  If not, it's a crapshoot to figure out what might be going on.

Honestly, this is a better approach all around.  You'll be dealing with a piece of hardware that is well-known and -supported.  The CX-55 never really reached that point.

 

Go for a 2600Jr.  They're still pretty affordable and work just fine for 2600 duties; I have a couple and no complaints.  The cases also match the 5200 and 7800, so look good when placed next to each other.

 

I may be interested in the CX-55 if you decide to let it go in order to offset the costs of a 2600.  There are some things I'm working on where it would be useful to have a second one, and I'm OK with it being a non-working project.

I had TWO juniors, both the short rainbow versions, in 2017 and last year, but had to sell both to pay bills, and I also still have that malfunctioning 7800 I have yet to get repaired, in which we all know plays 2600 games with my Harmony Encore, so it's a crap shoot and I'd rather either have my 7800 repaired or get a short rainbow Jr. provided (and it's crap shoot) I can still find one that still has the plastic film on the bezel or that is nearly flawless (like my 7800 is as it had the film on it when I bought her)

 

Let's put out a poll:

 

a. Repair the 7800 and use it for my 2600 gaming

 

or

 

b. Try and search (probably here on the AA marketplace as eBay is too suspect) for a near mint short rainbow 2600 Jr.

IIRC, @-^CrossBow^- had requested that you get in touch with him to discuss repairs.  This is likely your best bet as you'll end up with a fully-functioning system in known-good condition rather than taking a chance on one that may need work.  It also covers all of the bases for the 2600, 5200, and 7800 without requiring extra physical space.

Yup, I was thinking of the same thing, and, I can also reacquire the Concerto 7800 multicart as well, and rediscover those games (I still do have my ROM library) and check out new games I may have missed in the past year too. Settled. I'll repair the 7800.   Problem solved. Thanks!!

Hey thanks for the info, maybe you guys are right it is getting out of hand, fortunately I have also been speaking with others including one of my coworkers (Dale) about getting some help (not a loan) about budgeting but I don't know if Cindy Margolis is going to like this but I do have to clamp down on it, fortunately my next paycheck is gonna be a good one as I worked 5 days last week but ever since making the transfer request from the meat department to something more in the mornings it seems like on some weeks that I only get 3 or 4 days a week of work.

 

I have already cut down the amount of gas I use by staying home and (yes) playing Atari and checking out the tube although I had to put Hulu on pause for three months to use that money for getting out of this mess like paying off my bills, and, I've rediscovered drinking not only the cheap (store brand) cola in 4 2 liter bottles for $5.00 (that ads up to 62.5 cents a liter as opposed to $2.69 for a one liter bottle of the named stuff, but also, decaf, brewing up pots at home with plenty of International Delight coffee creamer that we happen to carry in our dairy case, so things are getting up there and as for @x=usr(1536) I checked my bank balance this morning and it stands in the plus column at around $2.50 but my PayPal account is at -$67.00 for my AVG anti-virus software and they debit my account every year twice for it, but no big purchases have been made in this past month.

 

Just my cable bill to go and that's it for this month, but I'm pulling out all the stops to get back on track. I've even been considering dropping Hulu altogether since I don't watch enough TV to warrant having that service, especially when I found out that it's gone up to over 85 bucks a month, so I'm thinking about ditching it. I already have local cable (Hulu does not carry all 70 of my local channels only 5 of them) and my broadband internet and that'll do fine for me, so I can't watch sports but at least I've got my local news and the web as well as tuning into Brian Tyler Cohen on YouTube so I can keep informed.

I have received praise for clamping down on my spending from some of my fellow tenants here at Bishop Park, one of them, Scarlet, thinks it's a great move to put Hulu on pause for 3 months and I did just that yesterday, but I've also been thinking of cutting the cord on cable TV and just watch the news in the community room we have here like my crosshall neighbor Earl does whenever he wants to watch some TV, of course I'll be keeping the internet but ditching the TV services almost altogether in order to focus more on both staying out of debt and building up my account instead.

At this point, I am more concerned with calling the police and reporting a dangerous mental case of a stalker than worrying about some dude's finances that won't take advice.  I am 100% serious - if someone was oddly fascinated with my niece like this and I was made aware, there would be some serious shit going down.  This is beyond creepy - it's a sick obsession and frankly, it scares me.

I ALSO told them that their merch goes out first thing Thursday morning, and, some rather good news on the front, I found out that my next paycheck this Thursday is gonna be a few cents short of a whopping $250.00 so there should be NO EXCUSES or reasons why I shouldn't send them out their merch. I was hoping that maybe with her connections to the mainstream entertainment industry, that maybe she (and her management Neil Cirucci) could've gotten me signed or at least give me a fair shot at trying to earn a contract, you figure after 28 years in this business and granted she did extend my career by 20 years that maybe she could've helped me (at least) get my foot in the door, so to speak.

 

28 years of talent gone to waste. I even made a Hitler parody video in which the Fuhrer is pissed at her in part for letting my career rot like it did..
