HSC20 Round 1: Donkey Kong Jr *New Season 2023 Join In!*

Recommended Posts

Still plenty of time left in this round but here are the first tables. The round 2 poll will start in a day or two. This round runs until Weds 1st Feb 2023 :)

McKong and myself will not get any bonus challenge points (below) so that leaves everyone else with a chance! Will have the 1pt for top NTSC player bonus too, sort that at the end of the round. Same scoring as usual 12pts down to 2pts ;)

455200 level 14 1st life 295200.

I lose most of my lives on the last screen. After level 4 it gets very busy and there are no safe spots on the screen.

:-o:thumbsup: I figure beating your own record will keep you busy enough and earn you the bonus point ;)

Think I can get further once I stop being greedy and messing around exploring!

I'm interested to see how high somebody gets on level 1.  I got so lucky, and just 20,800...

In a later run I manage 87,600 for a new personal best.

Now I am passing the sparks level pretty reliably if I get there... it's the springboard level that gives me trouble.

We have finally a score that we want to share. But as said, we are not so thrilled about this game. Somehow the game controls feel too sensitive.

Anyhow, we are proud that we have a score to present.

Daughter "Dinky2008" 11300 points

And me, Marius: 24600 points

We play Atari every night, and we always started with this game, but we decided to wait for round #2 for now. Let's see what round 2 will bring us!

By the way: we play Joust together a lot, which is awesome in a co-op mode.

OK, on the board with(edited since I don't see my name on the updated table so far):

First level:  18000

First man: 13400

High Score: 38100

I can get to the 2nd screen on level 2 really easily, but the birds move so fast and it's so hard to judge I keep dying like crazy.  I'm using a file version but I'm not sure where it's from exactly, it's just one I would have had in my collection.  I'm going to try the Homesoft one and if it's any different I'll let you know.

Donkey Kong Jr: 42,400

First level: 10,300

This game would benefit from a scene selector similar to Miner49er where can choose your zone.   Would help practice the different scenes.   Maybe need to hack to start at each scene to help practice.

Thinking of keeping Weds as the HSC start/end day as it's a reasonable one for me!

This round runs until Weds 1st Feb 2023 8PM UK time / 3PM EST :)

Round 2 Poll is OPEN FOR VOTING as a few of you have already seen ;)

McKong and myself will not get any bonus challenge points (below) so that leaves everyone else with a chance! Will have the 1pt for top NTSC player bonus too, sort that at the end of the round. Same scoring as usual 12pts down to 2pts ;)

Poof! Your wish is granted. 🙂

According to http://www.atariprotos.com/8bit/software/dkjr/dkjr.htm:

"If you find yourself dying too much, you can turn on the cheat mode that was left in the game.  To activate the cheat mode, hold down the shift key and type BOOGA.  There will be no sound or other indication that the mode is activated.  Now you can type K if you want to be invincible (except by falling into water) or S to skip to the next level.  There are two addition keys, but they’re not very useful:  I will disable the invincibility and O will disable the entire cheat mode.  Many developers put cheat modes into their games to help with development and testing, but it’s rare that they got left in the final project as Atari was pretty good at finding and disabling such things."

Thank you!   This is awesome.    Makes it much easier to learn the scenes before getting into a full game.  Need to save this in my cib copy manual.

Tried it out and it works (at least the skip level, not interested in the invincibility).  I kept dying in 3 spots in the trampoline scene and already reduced that to 2!   Will give more practice this weekend to get more reliable.

Total score 12200 pts (a score I set last week, but forgot to mention)

I'm unsure if I will have any time to play this game again until the round has ended, so I post this low score in order to be on the scoreboard at all.
