Hello, I am Atari fan since 1984 and as I just have just modified my Lynx II with McWill-LCD and GameDrive I now would like to take part in your competition.

 

I didn't play most of the games mentioned here at all, so I am curious what the next rounds will bring.

I probably won't finish/complete the BETA, it is very very hard.

 

The shooting mechanic feels partly jammed. It plays decent with the fast shots, but that effect is limited.

I think there is a limitation of the original code that it only allows two player shots at the same time. If I remember right the rapid fire is a bit of a trick that multiplies the same two shots. It would be a lot less frustrating if you had three shots at a time, I think.

The game limits to 2 shots on screen, if you hit the invaders quickly, you can fire rapidly "new" shots, however if the two shots miss and travel off screen you can't fire during that time.

Increasing speed of shots would help, as the shots would need less time to travel the whole screen, thus you could fire in much shorter intervalls.

For reference, the beta ends after the second big invader wave. So I suspect you're close.

I recognize this, and also it got slightly worse compared to the original ROM because I removed the odd "blue bounding box on a page" background that existed due to the Lexis game. So player shots now travel farther towards the upper edge of the screen than they did in the original ROM. Adding a third shot would be ideal, but ripples through a lot of the existing ROM code. I'll see what I can do about it.

Microvaders - 23700 for me, no deaths before the end screen. I think the asteroids are indestructible and I couldn’t score anything in the asteroid run. So maybe 23700 is the maximum?

It is a ton of fun. Unless I hear that this is not the max score, I think I will switch over to the Preview Edition and see how well my skills transfer.

It's hard to say what the max score is, but my estimate is 24-25K. The enemies are worth different points based on when you shoot them, and the powerups can affect the score as well.

 

The asteroids screen is just a preview of what that part of the game will be like; there is no scoring or objective for the asteroids in the beta or PE cart.
