Q: Is it safe to assume that my "tank2" tank will need to function equally well as "tank1" (on the left side of the map) during actual competition rounds?

Yes. Your tank will be assigned one of the sides randomly. It shouldn't really matter as your routine will not know the difference :)

I have some questions regarding some of the rules.

Quote

In order to mitigate "campers", i.e. tanks that just lie in wait and don't move, there will be a limit of 100 actions per round for each tank. If a tank exceeds that limit then it will be destroyed.

Does this mean that if no tank is able to shoot and kill the other tank before 100 turns have occurred, the tank that was randomly selected to move first loses that round? Is the first-mover always randomly selected for each of the 5 rounds?  Or does the winner of the last round automatically become first mover on the next round?  ...because a series of 5 rounds is far from a statistical sampling for a random distribution.

Any tank that remains stationary for 4 consecutive turns will incur a 5-point hit to its action count. Remember that an action constitutes of either turning, moving forward or firing.

What is the definition of remaining "stationary"? Which actions constitute "movement" for the purposes of this rule?

EDIT> Looking at the code, it appears that movement = CODE=1 aka "go forward".

This is turning out to be quite the exercise!

Yes, the first tank to move is randomly selected with each turn and not just at the beginning of each round, regardless of who won the last round. So if the 100 action limit is hit, whichever tank won the initiative that turn will be destroyed.

And yes, moving forward is the only non-stationary action available. Any other action will count toward the 5 stationary action limit.

5 days to go :)

The contest is now officially closed and we have 4 entries.

Here are the parings:

     Tursi -----------------------------

                                               ------------------------------

     Switch1995 -------------------                                  -

                                                                                  -

                                                                                  ----------------------------------

                                                                                  -

     Retrodroid --------------------                                   -

                                               ------------------------------

     SteveB -------------------------

Since there will be only 3 battles, I will post a video of each so people can appreciate the skills (or abject failures ) involved, likely by early next week at which time we should have a winner.

Good luck to all the contestants!

I’ve got a feeling that @Tursi will be commanding a Leopard II fresh off the assembly line.  My 1955 T-62 with a turret so rusty, it barely turns, will need some luck!

Haha.. work has been really crazy. My tank is essentially driven by Eliza, so don't be surprised if it stops to ask how you're doing. ;)

“Hey listen! I think we’ve got enough problems on our own having you shooting at us, so if you could avoid laying your problems on us as well, I think we’d all find it easier to cope!”

The suspense is killing me!  lol.

I know this all takes a bunch of time, but it would be pretty neat to have a side tournament where every entry faces every other entry and the entry with the overall highest win ratio takes it.

If @Vorticon can't swing it he could make the entries available so we could run our own tournaments.

So watching my opponent - I really like Retrodroid's strategy when both tanks are approaching at an offset, of stopping to turn and wait. That may well be the strategy that takes me out, I'm not sure how my tank will deal with that.

My tank runs on a concept of "Hunt, Pursue, Destroy", with wall avoidance (that apparently can't cope with the left side of the bottom center hump). Since there's no changing the code now, I'll describe the intent to help the bookies. ;)

Depending on whether we start on the left or the right, the sequence is mirrored. The main change is the search direction being clockwise or counter-clockwise. For the most part, hunt is heading to the top (or bottom), then moving across the field with occasional turns towards the middle to see if we see the enemy.

Once we see them, we switch to pursuit mode. If we lose sight of them, we track where they might be going and head for that location. If for some reason we can't get close, we'll go back to search mode. But normally, we'll get close enough to keep them in sight.

In pursuit mode, we try to close the longest axis first (horizontal or vertical). This of course is the most crucial piece of information for countering and why I'm not sure if the sit-and-wait technique will get me. I might drive into the line of fire, or I might not, I'm not 100% sure but it will depend some on the range. We didn't see any examples as to whether Retrodroid will turn if I change direction.

If in sight and in range, then I should fire. I saw one example of the enemy tank driving right past me without a shot, but that could have been the initiative not being in my favor. If I fire and didn't kill the enemy, I assume there's an obstacle in the way I didn't see (I do check!) and fall back to obstacle avoidance.

That's it... there's a lot of checks to facilitate the search and some kind of semi-sane obstacle avoidance. ;)

It is super interesting to see the different approaches taken by each of the contestants given the same set of rules and constraints.

I do agree that Retrodroid's approach will likely be deadly in close quarters when both sides see each other. I'll run the final battle later today and post it.

Anybody taking bets??? 😁
