OK, thanks; I got it figured out now.

 

I was trying that earlier today, but I was unfamiliar with some of the register nicknames used on the list, and just hadn't selected the right one.

Can someone explain to me how you mix GTIA modes and normal modes horizontally - like in pic 1 and 7?

You need to setup a DLI (Display List Interrupt) and within the interrupt, toggle the GPRIOR register ($D01B).  Do not issue w WSYNC command - you have to calculate where you want the mode to change, and use code (usually NOPs).

 

Note - if you start with a MODE F line with GPRIOR set to 0, then toggle to a GTIA mode, then back to 0, there is a bug where the right of the screen will now be in MODE E.
