You need to setup a DLI (Display List Interrupt) and within the interrupt, toggle the GPRIOR register ($D01B). Do not issue w WSYNC command - you have to calculate where you want the mode to change, and use code (usually NOPs). Note - if you start with a MODE F line with GPRIOR set to 0, then toggle to a GTIA mode, then back to 0, there is a bug where the right of the screen will now be in MODE E.
