5200 OE HSC Challenge 04/2023 The Dreadnaught Factor

Our game for April, is The Dreadnaught Factor, played on Game 7. Use real 5200 systems and Atari mfg controls, -1hsc pt for use of period analog sticks (Wico). The only modern exceptions allowed, are flashcarts/SD loaders, running original Roms. Pics preferred, but not required, except for HSC wins and records. Round ends when month does.

 

Current HSC record, bust it for a bonus point!

Since I do not have this one, I checked on eBay for it.  There were more boxed copies, and more sealed copies, by 3 or 4 multiples for each, than there were loose carts!  I guess I will be sitting this one out.

you don't have a atarimax sd cartridge, so you can just download the rom.

Can't always be the same old same old. Some of the other variations have already been maxxed out repeatedly, and this one allows for all level players to reach their peaks.  Besides, we get a whole month to work on these games.

There's a few games we run the upper variants on, Defender, Centipede, Missile Command, and others. With a quality, but limited library, digging deeper into titles, presents a new, but familiar challenge. This was actually one of my faves in my heyday, and been several years since we dusted it off.

well worth an eventual pick-up, if you get the chance. The 5200 port was one of the system's shining stars, combining the vertical scroll of the A8 port, with the superior fire control of the INTV port. The analog stick plays a great part in the control as well. I even had a cart with the hacks TDF2, & TDF3, made up for me.

I can get one good play in daily, until meds kick in, lol. Been a long time since even doing that, regularly. At the least, I'll give a run for the money.  Sometimes I care, mostly just wanna sleep. Glad to see one of my faves taking off here, in 1982-83 world.  I'm hoping I can still crack 10k in this one, many years later.

the batwing one usually gets me. the random ship selection is a huge factor in the higher scores too.

Luck plays a part, in that you got "for me" the hardest ship 2nd. Each time you play, the order is different, other than 1st ship.

I still haven't seen the tie fighter yet.

after the third or fourth Dreddie I had to put the controller down, get some fresh air, and recompose myself.  it was the donut and had me cussing

I been having to do that almost everytime I defeat one.

My best score so far is 3,542.  I had one goal, and that was to make it through a whole play through without my controller ceasing to function properly.  I did not make it.  Sometimes I could not go right or slow down.  Sometimes it was fine, but every so often the joystick would stop working correctly.  Maybe I need to adjust the controller pots again.

 

Thanks to @RB5200 for selling me a multicart so I could play this one.

I adjusted my controller pot, and I started zipping around like an out of control maniac.  It took me a little bit to get used to the new feel, but my score did improve to 7,245.
