What can you guys tell me about the CyberPunk 2077 game?

Recommended Posts

I've been watching it on GOG, and the price goes on sale quite regularly... but even it's sale price is insignificant, which tells me it's probably a pretty good game and they still see a strong demand signal. The price doesn't really bother me, I just don't know I want to buy another game that I won't play. Is it cool / worth it? I assume it's very Bladerunner-esq?

If I was going to buy it, would it be better to get it on Steam because of all the additional mods that I may want to buy / download?

Just curious if anyone here has any thoughts on it... and what kind of game it really is? I assume it's not a FPS, but maybe more like an adventure game?

It catches a lot of flack, especially the console versions near launch, but despite that, it's my favorite game ever made. I knew it the first day too. Just wow.

The star of the show is the city itself. They pretty well nailed the atmosphere, even in the daylight. They nailed the scenery, NPCs, crowds, soundtrack--heck, the soundtrack's main theme kind of reinforces the plot/sidequests. The gang HQ's are special treats--very pretty, fun to sneak around in. Also the main storyline is very well acted by Keanu Reeves, who plays character who's unexpectedly complex, always a jerk, but only rarely annoying.  At one point I reloaded the game because my decision disappointed him...a mass murderer...

Sidequesting and character interaction aren't as deep as, say, Deus Ex, but hit similar marks. This makes sense since cyberpunk is also set in a lot broader, less confined playground. You're generally only going to see a few missions that tell different parts of a specific NPC's story, for example, (where deus ex does it all over) and most people in cyberpunk are some level of 'crowd scenery.'  Also a lot of doors are just painted onto buildings. Sometimes quests take you into unexpected doors, but not often.

For an open-world game it manages to hit some of the usual open world quest marks of 'find all the ______' --but it doesn't run as many simultaneous collection loops as a lot of these games, so don't expect the constant exploration rewards of a Forza Horizon. There are some cool things to find, maybe avoid the guides for a bit and just explore.

So yeah, if there's a slider with deus ex on one end, and grand theft auto on the other, this game sits at about halfway between them.

Oh, there are problems. And they are visible everywhere. But really only a small proportion of the game, and most are harmless.  One of the more common ones I've heard folks complain about is the ol' walk around the corner and one of the scenery trash bags drops to the ground and explodes as soon is it gets rendered onscreen. Happens a lot. But when you consider all the junk everywhere in the city, a trash bag exploding when you round every 10th corner isn't so bad.

There are also several instances of 'stand on this object you're not supposed to be on, and the game hard-crashes when you glitch through'. Finding all of them is a bit of fun on its own 🤣  --mind I haven't played the game since the launch window, so some of these may be fixed.

Awesome, thank you so mcuh! I appreciate the response, I didn't get a notification so I didn't respond sooner. Ok, next time it's on any kind of discount, I'm going to buy it. I just hope I don't get addicted to it... hahah....

I beat it once and thought it was great. I actually bought it twice (PS5 and PC). They fixed a lot of the problems by now so a lot of the complaints from the early days dont apply anymore. Its well worth the $30 on sale.

Are you :

Between 30-50 years of age

British or had a punk lifestyle at any point in your life.

Left wing, like whatever that means over here in Europe, not the centre right democrat stuff in the US.

If you answered yes to all three of those questions like I did, cyberpunk 2077 will make you wet yourself as a transposition of the problems of a commercialised global world where the corporations rule and the individuals fight the system.

Alternatively if you really like the idea of slicing people with a katana in bullet time (looking at you metal gear rising fans) or really want to see Keanu Reeves try to act badass and swear a lot, you might also like it.

It's a fancy shooter but whatever way you cut it.
