Dino Rage W.I.P. and Pre-alpha roms for download (new Wave 1 Games project)

WAVE 1 GAMES

Recommended Posts

Currently working on a 2D fighting game with the help of 3D artist Jose Diaz. The game is being done from scratch and will be a spoof of Primal Rage with gameplay and controls similar to that of Super Smash Bros. Below is one screenshot as well as 2 pre-alpha builds of the game for people to try on their game drives. The game is in a very early stage and the current goal is to get one fully functional 100% character, after that I will work on the rest of the characters building off the first one. Finally stages will be done LAST as priority will be getting the fighting game characters working to perfection. The jungle and grid backgrounds you will see in these pe-alpha roms are merely placeholders for the time being. (although the grid style one may end up in the game as the training stage) The goal is to have 12 playable dinosaurs, but that number could be cut to as low as 8. Each character will have a multitude of hitboxes for each body part that will be configured differently and arranged accordingly to the characters current action state  The build presented here shows the characters idle, walking and jumping functions. The 3 attack states are currently assigned to the Jaguars 3 action buttons A,B and C, however they are in a very early stage and not tweaked at the time of this writing. Pressing the Option button will engulf your character in a dinosaur egg which will be the basis for blocking in this game. If you are interested download one of the roms and have a look and feel free to discuss, I won't be very active in the forums for a while but I wanted to let folks know what I was working on and that this will be coming to the Jag one day.

Phoboz and Jag_Mag have both offered to help with development if and when I run into any trouble. If you want to be a play tester for Dino Rage simply shoot me a PM and you can get onboard with the project. Any playtsters will be credited in the final release as what you do is very important to the overall quality of the game.

This is a cool idea, please though, try not to let it end up playing like Primal Rage, which was a steaming pile of turd.

If you can take the concept, those nice graphics, and actually make it play well then this could be a decent offering.

Jag_Mag though…really?

Pressing option to block is not recommended. The player should never have to take their hands off the main face buttons (A, B, C) in a game like this. It's one thing in the original Genesis Mortal Kombat on a three-button pad, where the start button was directly above the core face buttons, but the Jaguar pad is not laid out like that. Holding back to block (like Street Fighter, or actual Primal Rage) is far more ideal on this control setup.

The arcade version of Primal Rage is excellent and holds up. Many of its home conversions however, especially on compromised three-button setups, are not.

I agree. That's up for change anyway the option key is kind of a placeholder spot for it as well. I also just wanted to see how block felt on the option key

I always disliked Primal rages gameplay but enjoyed it's visuals. I really want this to play like smash bros as I feel Nintendo got it right with easy to pickup moves and gameplay

I really like the concept and hope that you can come up with a cool game.

Any new ideas you plan on throwing in? I'd like a side-game where you get to raise your dino Tamagotchi style (really, I think it would be a fun distraction).

That's not a bad idea and I will take note of it.

I don't want to get too far ahead of myself on extras and gimmicks right now.

The goal right now is for me to get 1 fully 100% functional fighting game character. Once that is done that will be a milestone for me and for the game. After that I can build the remaining characters using him as a template. Then after I'm comfortable with how all of the characters perform and after extensive play testing from others I will start adding stages. I do have some ideas about making the stages very different from what we are used to in a 2D fighting game but at the moment these are just ideas and I don't want to lose focus as the fighting itself is top priority.

After the core gameplay and stages are implemented then I can start thinking about extra features like the virtual pet you mentioned. (Those were cool back in the 90s and I have thought about making a virtual pet on Jaguar before so who knows maybe I will!)

I should also mention I am looking for a 2D pixel artist to do the blood and hit sparks for this game.

I hope you take the playtesting feedback to heart and follow through with what they mention.

The idea seems to be solid, take the time to get the controls and bugs worked out.

So, we are looking at an early June 2023 release?

Not a chance.

I don't know when it will be released.

I can confidently say a free demo containing 2 complete characters will be released this year but as far as the game goes I can not put an ETA on it as I have never made a fighting game before. It's almost June now....so that is unrealistic anyway.

As long as this is stable, tight, fast, responsive, reliable, and fun; I'm in.

All of what you just said is what is most important of all. It has to feel and play a certain way. That's what was wrong with Primal Rage. It felt clunky at times. But when you look at games like Smash Bros Brawl, that is fast, fluid, responsive and easy to pick up and play. It is my goal to achieve that kind of play on the Jaguar.

Primal Rage was actually pretty decent.

Expecting a homebrewer beating that with the very first attempt is kinda bizarre. But maybe I'am just a naysayer lol.

But when someone with a poor track record is promising the moon again, I would be sceptical.

Probin the minority here but I suggest using the ProController for optional mapping - should button to block (which would mean a number button for non-pro).  There isnt a clean way for a non-pro with this type of game so lets get it as good as possible with Pro-Controller mapping

Looks interesting so far.

Yeah. I would like to see Jeffrey taking his time to make a polished release. But i must also say that he should also use BigPEmu to test the Game, as 42bs days.

Can you explain which gameplay mechanics typical of Smash Bros you are planning to implent?

If i had to guess, it means attacks based on directional input rather than standard fighting game special move commands.

I will not be using any emulators for testing only real hardware.

You are correct about the control scheme in smash bros, that's the idea.
