Hello dear physical beings with all your limbs and organs,

it has been speculated that I might be an AI. Unfortunatly this is an unfalsifiable suggestion in this context, and therefore I can't provide argumentation that would be satisfactory.

As I was planning to buy a birthday gift for a fellow human creature made of clay that is into music, I was wondering if it is even adequate to gift music in the form of the antiquated physical media that is the CD. Checking my internal database for alternatives, I was left with nothing. This can't be right. It feels like something is missing. Bluerays are still a thing, physical gaming media as well. But for how long? There seems to be a constant push for ending physical media. Look at the Xbox Ones always online push, that comes with a Kinect HAL 9000 module for your enjoyment.

Is it possible to kill physical media? Will it happen? What are the implications of centralised media? Please share your thoughts.

And please do not under any circumstances dispear.

In a recent DF direct John Linneman said that he has finally experienced a cloud gaming service he deemed adquate. 'It's good'.

Music streaming is quite common place these days and it may be that we end up not having a conventional physical media for music, aside from expensive high end stuff like vinyl.

Maybe the push for online options, whether it is streaming or downloads can kill physical gaming media as well. When new releases need to be patched anyway to be enjoyed, it kind of works against physical gaming media as well.

I'm asking, because it seems that the market is increasingly shifting towards amazon and digital distribution. This centralizes the market and might be a concern for physical media but also long as well as short term availability.

Right now, I'm buying DVDs and CDs at very low cost, lots more that I can keep up with. These days it really makes me feel like I did back in the 80's and 90's when I was buying video game cartridges for dirt cheap. These are great times for physical media (collecting). I know DVDs and CDs will eventually become more scarce, but I'm not so sure physical media will disappear.

Sure, I watch the occasional Youtube video, but in general streaming just seems so ephemeral; I am the kind of person who enjoys touching and holding and feeling the things in my life. I just get so much more from listening to an album if I have a cover to look at and hold in my hands. CDs and DVDs aren't quite the same, but a physical copy still just feels better.

No you are not the only one, I'm with you on this. Especially the original masters are recommended in many cases for high fidelity listening, so pick those CDs up fo cheap while you can.

I recently picked up the original release of 12 inches of snow.

However if you are looking at the numbers it seems that physical media in gaming might go the way of the CD. And datpear is hard to swallow.
