In the end it was mostly about coding assumptions, tos versions and not assuming updates. Alot of things were fixed over the years, but original software / images , will have the issues they had when released. That last sentence is always the issue. ST Format did a list of incompatible games around the time the STe launched - Populous, Kick Off, New Zealand Story and Captain Blood come to mind - I think there were fixed commercial copies of most of them before too long, but you'd need to know which edition you're getting, unless you have an ST available too of course. Ninja Warriors comes to mind as one that was never fixed though, even when reissued much later the box still said 'not STE compatible'. It was fine on the version that shipped with Altered Beast. The one that shipped with Sonic had a verification chip, and broke Populous and a few other games. I want to say most EA games had broken, as they tried to cheat Sega out of some money.
