rsiddall
Sprite updates and a better looking playfield. What Popeye might have looked like in 1983. Haven't tried inserting sprites into original rom - yet. Popeye moves around on one floor and punches. Popeye.bin
alfredtdk
I just say... Wow. Imagine if Popeye at that time was released with this level of graphic detail. I understand that at that time there were deadlines and everything was done in a rush and there was not so much concern with graphic fidelity compared to arcades.
alfredtdk
May I suggest that Moon Patrol with the carnivorous alien plants on the ground or Jungle Hunt with the monkeys in the vines one day become part of the What if...?
rsiddall
I did try a hack of Moon Patrol a while back. Tried to make the buggy look better but to mixed results. I think the vehicle would benefit by making it from two sprites to allow for more detail. Hard to make better wheels within the confines of an 8 pixel wide graphic.

glurk
I approve of these "What If" ROMs. Cool idea. And this one looks really good. I compared it to the original game, and it looks like not TOO many changes. Single-line colors on the players, and some changes to the PF graphics, and a few PF color changes. It makes me wonder if it would be possible to modify the original game to add these changes. Not enough to make me disassemble the whole game and work on it, though... Probably, the existing kernel is doing all it can and there would not be enough cycles for per-line color changes without using DPC or something. I do wonder if it could be done in 16K though. Probably, if I did work on it, I'd eventually get it disassembled and find it's max-ed out on cycles already...

I am trying to make only playfield, background and sprite changes with these examples. I have no way of knowing if what I'm doing would work within the confines of a specific kernel, but looking at it as having the potential. alfredtdk
I don't know if it was just me, but at first it doesn't seem to work on the console. I got only a small blur on the screen.

I've disabled but worked around it to get you something for viewing on a console. PopeyeRev1.bin Edited July 14 by rsiddall
