Forum searching

Recommended Posts

Yes.  If you're already in the forum, move the mouse over the search field at the top, and you then click to open drop-down where you can select "This Forum", as shown below:

Also, if you click on the Search icon (the magnifying glass), you'll be brought to the Advanced Search page.  This gives you considerably more options, including selecting one or more forums you'd like to search.  You first want to click on "Topics" under "Content Type", and then you can select all the forums you wish to search in.  For instance,

You can then enter the search term you wish to search for, or enter additional criteria if you wish.

Hope this help!

piggy-backing onto this question ...

Is there a way to search for  2 words that both must be in the search results?  If I search for "this and that" , I get hits on "and".  If I search for " 'this' and 'that' ", same thing.

Note that the available search functions depend on whether you're using desktop view (computer) or mobile view. I noticed that earlier this week, when I had to enable desktop view on my phone in order to search within the thread I was reading, and then returning to mobile view afterwards.

That is actually the default behavior for the forum.  For instance, if you search for "quadrun reproduction", it'll only return results that have both words, either in the title of the topic or for individual posts.  If you don't see both terms highlighted in the result, then one of the search terms is buried in the post somewhere.  Here's a screenshot of my search:

Invision forum software normally defaults to ORing search terms together, but fortunately you can change that to AND the terms instead.

If you're seeing searches failing to work as described above, please let me know what specifically you are searching for, and I can investigate.

On my phone (iOS, using Safari), if I put my phone in landscape mode, that then shows the desktop version of the forum, and you can then easily search within the topic.  Here's a screenshot (click for larger view):

Ok, I see that now. is there a way to use NOT to narrow result sets?  search on "quadrun reproduction"  but not if the word "Coleco" comes up in it, for example?

I don't believe there's a way to exclude a search term.  I did ask on the Invision support forum, though, to see if there's a way to do so.

Minus sign prefix seems to do it: "quadrun reproduction -coleco" ?

I did try that, but I need to do some searches with and without, as I'm not convinced it's actually working as expected.  Still waiting to hear back regarding the question I posted on the Invision forum as well.  It's easy to do in SQL, but the question is whether or not they actually programmed it into the forum search.

Yea the search is not good at all.

I searched for MG Explorer Manual by Doug Warren and best I get is the Strips you put on the computer above the keyboard.

Not even a close second of a search.

I searched "MG Explorer Manual", and this topic did come up in the first page of results when searching the entire forum:

You can also search just in titles, which will greatly narrow the results if you know (or suspect) those words are in the title of a post.  I suspect the two-character "MG" isn't actually being searched for, but the forum does still highlight it in the search results.  Pretty sure that the default MySQL Search queries will ignore two-character search terms.

If you narrow the search to the TI forums, you'll get that MG Explorer Manual results right away.

One thing I do need to do is setup ElasticSearch again, which will produce MUCH better search results and they will be much faster, and I can allow for two-character search terms.

An alternative means of searching if you're not getting the results you need is is using Google, and prefixing your search with "site:atariage.com".  An example:

site:atariage.com mg explorer manual

LOL there is no PDF of the manual in that thread, just a single page TXT file.

I was looking for the MILLER GRAPHICS EXPLORER manual in PDF format.

But thanks for your time.
