Help! My Adam prints in Aztec!

Recommended Posts

Is my Adam printer cursed by Aztec gods?

So, jokes aside, I decided to try out my printer with some paper today annnd I had some *interesting* results.

After typing out a paper about random stuff, I took the paper and found I could barely read it (ink must be low or dry) and I couldn't understand a single word!

It's as if the entire paper was written in Aztec or something xD.

So I have 2 questions I'd love help with:

1) How do I put new ink in the Adam printer?

2) Why is my printer typing out incoherent sentences? And how do I fix that??

Help is much appreciated, thanks! (Here's hoping it's not cursed lol.)

On 1st glance, it appears that the printwheel is only hitting the top of the letter.  Could be that your printwheel is not clicked into the slot which keeps it in place.  It might be just turning some as the wheel revolves around and printing incorrect letters.  Could also be bad printer logic board.  OR it really IS printing in Axtec code.

Or the ink ribbon cartridge is not snapped in correctly. That sounds more likely.

How do I snap it in correctly? I've never used a printer like this before, I presume the ribbon cartridge is the black object that slides back and forth hitting the paper?

Here is what my printer looks like right now, does anything seem off?

Hmmm...I don't have my printer hooked up so I can't tell for certain, but in the picture it appears the ribbon cartridge is snapped in all the way on the left with that little clip over the top of it, but on the right it is not under the clip. It's been so long since I've used my printer that I don't even remember it having clips like that.

Ohh, I think I see. I'll try and fix that, but I got to be careful, don't want to accidentally break the printer :P

You are aware that the top cover of the ADAM printer (the part over the printing head) is easily removable, right?

Oh, I literally had no idea until you told me! Stuff like that may seem obvious to people that have had their Adam for a long time, but I'd never seen anybody do that on a video or mention it before, so I just found out now...thank you! :)

This is what I was thinking.  Old printers like that always 'enjoyed' somehow moving the ribbons up too high.  Almost all of the ribbon-based printers I've used throughout the years have done that.

All he has to do is download the ADAM Owners Manuals that are available in PDF format on The ADAM Archive for complete instructions with pictures that explain everything, including the removable/pop-off lid. Numerous times in these threads we suggest this and suggest that, which is great and all and nice to see people trying to help, but if a little time was spent reading instructions that are available, most of these questions wouldn't have to be asked.

Now, if all options were exhausted, ie. taking a couple minutes to read the instructions, then sure, post away asking for help.

Sorry folks, just having a moment here as you can probably tell and trying not to just say RTFM. 🤐

As I recall we both looked for these manuals on the ADAM Archive site and couldn't find them. I thought the site was dead anyway. It hasn't been updated since February.

Well, you didn't look hard enough as the ADAM Owner's Manuals are right there in plain sight on the main page of the Manuals directory.

(AdamArchive.Org) - The home for everything ADAM

No need to spread false information about another website being dead.

I've seen numerous sites not updated for months without false rumors being thrown around. Thanks for taking the time to visit the site!

You should understand this from your days covering baseball, "Take a little off your fastball there kiddo".

Umm, sorry if I caused any drama, I really couldn't find it on the website and I tried looking. Jblenkle was kind enough to scan the printer manual and send it to me.

No drama...just over-sensitive people who have aligned themselves with the wrong side of the Force.

It all depends on one's PERSPECTIVE to determine who is on the wrong side of The Force.

You do recall that you were the one that threw the hissy fit when I volunteered to take over maintaining The ADAM Archive so that the ADAM Community wouldn't lose another valuable resource especially since you had let it be known that you might have to shut down your website due to how expensive it had become to keep it going.

All good. This thread will be cleaned soon enough and then we can carry on in another thread at a date to be determined.

Hey, my last word on the subject is that it's not my fault no one likes Milli. He's been blocked on more web pages than I can count. And as far as finances concerning my page, I no longer have any source of income to pay for domain registration or web hosting so I depend on the kindness of others to keep my page going. I'll keep it going as long as the donations are there.

It wasn't about Milli, it was about not LOSING another valuable source on the web for the Coleco ADAM Computer. You will just never understand or accept that fact... I understand.

As far as your web site, I was glad then and still glad now to see that it is still active and hope to see it continue for many years to come.
