What are the best fully original homebrews for the Colecovision?

Recommended Posts

We’re trying to figure out if Evercade might get ColecoVision games as part of the upcoming indie showcase, and I’m wondering what the best original ColecoVision homebrews are. To clarify, “original” means:

- NOT a port from arcade or another system

- NOT a hacked MSX or SG-1000 game

- NOT an unlicensed use of a character owned by some other company

I am totally ignorant of the ColecoVision world and am not finding a clear answer to this question on the web or on YouTube. So I am hoping some CV fans can help me out!

Hey there! I'm new to the Colecovision scene myself, and I haven't played many of it's games, but one original homebrew that has really stood out to me from what I've seen is "Children of the night" by team pixelboy. It's a pretty ambitious action RPG with a story and it's one game I'm very eager to play once I have an Atarimax.

Children of the Night is a converted MSX game. Many of the homebrews are.

Oh it was converted from an MSX original? My bad, I thought it was created for Colecovision first and *then* ported to MSX later. I remember reading a comment for the Youtube trailer of the game and in that comment, somebody asked if Children of the Night would get an MSX conversion or not, so it seemed to me it was a Colecovision original.

This is what I read from the gameplay trailer for "Children of the Night" on Youtube, and the oldest content regarding the game *seems* to be for the Colecovision version of the game, with the MSX version coming 2 years later, but I could be totally wrong.

Children of the Night was coded on ColecoVision first, then ported to MSX. Same goes for Multiverse, by the same homebrew author.

Other Team Pixelboy titles that could fit the criteria of the OP:

- Quest for the Golden Chalice (technically a copy of Adventure on Atari 2600, but coded from scratch with better graphics and extra features)

- Princess Quest (was coded on MSX first, but as a homebrew, not a commercial product, by AtariAge member nanochess)

- Mecha-8 (same as Princess Quest above)

- Mecha-9 (same as Princess Quest above)

- Module Man (coded from scratch, and autorized by the creator/coder of the original game on Coco-2 computer)

- Caos Begins (was coded on MSX first, but as a homebrew, by the same guy behind Children of the Night and Multiverse)

- Majikazo (was coded on MSX first, but as a homebrew. It is a clone of an obscure arcade game for which I forget the name...)

- Zombie Incident (again, was coded on MSX first, but as a homebrew, and ported to ColecoVision by the original author)

- QBIQS (It came out on MSX first, but was significantly recoded by the original author for the ColecoVision)

- Booming Boy (a clone of Bomber Man, it came out on MSX first, and then on ColecoVision not long after. Another homebrew.)

- The Cure (Castlevania clone, came out on MSX first, and then ported to ColecoVision by the original author)

- Ghost (Metroidvania of sorts, came out on MSX first, and then ported to ColecoVision by the original author)

- Prisoner of War (clone of Metal Gear, came out on MSX first, and then ported to ColecoVision by the original author)

The bottom line is that all of the games above are pure homebrews, and it should be possible to get licensing/royalty agreements from the original game authors, including Children of the Night and Multiverse.

Per Pixelboy, you are correct, of course. I've only heard of games going from MSX to ColecoVision, never the other way around. Guess you learn something new every day!!!

The Sydney Hunter games from Collectorvision.  Currently two for the CV with hopefully a third coming at some point.  I've only played Sacred Tribe so far but it was soooooo good.  I'm currently trying and failing to complete Multiverse, when I have the time.  That game is hard.  If you like a game that really makes you think about how to complete it, then Multiverse is for you.  I'm not sure what I think of it.  It's a good game but that level of challenge is too much like work time than playtime.  If anyone knows of a play-through video for Multiverse, please send me a link.  I can't find one.

None of mine, as they are all converted from my late 80's originals (which are themselves heavily inspired by arcade games that I played back then) for the Spectravideo and MSX and Berzerk is obviously an arcade port.  And all my pending titles (bar Pyxidis Ex) are arcade ports.

We have Princess Quest in the INTV version already, as well as Zombie Madness which seems related to the Zombie Incident?

Zombie Incident is a completely different game.

This is Mecha-8 for Colecovision:

And this is Mecha-9 for Colecovision:

Even if Children of the Night had been ported from the MSX, I'm pretty sure jgkspsx meant ports of old games.

Ports of games that are not approved by their legal copyright owner, yes. If you own the game by all means!

Steamroller is one of the best games i have ever played. As far as i know, it fits the criteria. It has brilliant game play, devious ai, excellent difficulty options and scaling, great scoring and extra life system, good level design, specific sound effect cues to keep you informed of what's happening around the playfield.. i could go on. It has great replay value and will always be in my top games across all systems.
