Crazy Climber
The kids are getting older so they don't really need/use the basement playroom anymore. Ive been so accustomed to using small spaces for my collection that I'm kind of overwhelmed with all the space I have now (500ish sq ft) To avoid the common problem I seem to have (more fun building the room than actually using it) I'm going to take it slow this time and just kind of add/remove stuff that makes sense...make sure to take time to enjoy it , etc.. Here is the first little "functional" corner that I came up with. Usually I would have gone with a desk style chair to have more space but those aren't comfortable for longer gaming sessions so I went with the vintage 70s armchair. I've been trying to score this chair for 15+ years but my wife's mom insisted they were going to use it some day. Well, she moved to a nursing home so its in my possession now. Its really comfortable but I need to track down a small ottoman for it 😃 I set up some magazine racks next to it since I scored a motherload of Nintendo power and others locally from member @H454 I thought my magazine collecting days were over but I'm glad they aren't, they really are fun to flip through on a Sunday morning 😀 He gave me a fantastic deal on them so I couldn't turn them down. Thanks man! I'm actually using/reading them! I hung some of the cooler ones on the wall, took a few of the poster out as well. Probably sacrilegious to the serious collector but I can't help it, they look so bad ass haha 😆 The game I took some serious time to play while I was doing all this was RASTAN for the sega master system... I have several CRTs down here but this specific one is a Sony Trinitron that was used for news broadcasting. Its probably one of the first TVs with AV and it gets such a great picture! I love this TV! Its boxy but its good 👍 My sega set up is pretty simple. Just a genesis running one of the earlier "pirate" flash carts... I ran a cord through the headphone jack to some powered studio monitors so I can really get the sound pumping if I want. I also use these monitors for my atarivox but thats a story for next time... My neighbor was throwing this desk away so I nabbed it. The slide out keyboard drawer works perfect to hide/store controllers. Now I can leave them all plugged in ready to go and not have gross tangled cords visible everywhere I have a LOT of systems hooked up to this TV (PS2, NES, 7800, sega) I picked up a sega master system controller too so I could finally play penguin land...not sure it was worth it... Rastan has been a blast though, for the first time ever I made it to (what I think) is the final boss. Id Google it but I don't want any spoilers, Ive waited over 30 years to beat this game myself haha 😆 So thats the first corner of the room, maybe 15% of the entire space I have to work with 😄 More coming soon.... 11 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/354031-basement-takeover/ Share on other sites
Crazy Climber
Small update... Decided to give Rastan one more go and I finally beat it!! Seriously, been playing this game on and off since the 80s, no hints, no tricks, used the stupid number of limited continues and totally crushed the dragon! Spoiler ending pic WHAT A RUSH!!! Growing up I was lucky to have two friends with sega master systems. They both basically had the same games but one had Rastan and one didn't... Well, we played a lot of Rastan at that kids house and to this day its one of my very favorite sega master system games. Its a blatant Conan rip off but thats part of what makes it cool. I love the variety of weapons, shields, armor, pendants etc you pick up along the way, all with different strengths. The difficulty is just right and its the perfect length. There is no timer but if you take too long day turns to night making it harder to see, such a cool feature. Now that I've played it all they way through I can genuinely say its a great game to the very end! This one's in my top 100 for sure 👍 Might try to finally beat this one next...another favorite of mine from back in the day 3 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/354031-basement-takeover/#findComment-5301356 Share on other sites
+bent_pin
That is awesome! That chair looks to be quite the comfy throne. 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/354031-basement-takeover/#findComment-5301373 Share on other sites
Crazy Climber
Got the NES fired up and running now...been a rather productive morning 😄 I have it hooked up through the RF on my Sony Trinitron broadcasting TV so I can sit in my comfortable chair and play NES. Ive never seen an old TV like this give such a crisp RF signal... (Pic does not do it proper justice) The shelf/cabinet I have the NES in has these sweet drawers so I can just flop the controllers in them when I'm not using them. I really hate cords all over the place so its pretty nice for my well being👌 Also since the NES has AV also I ran it through this little 10" panasonic TV that I recently picked up... It has two AV inputs so the NES gets one and this sweet AV modded sears Atari gets the other... Its kind of an unnecessary set up aside from ambiance since I play the NES on my Trinitron and play my modded Atari 7800 on the Trinitron as well but I just couldn't turn down this cute little CRT and had to find something to use it for. It is playable though and might be practical if multiple people are down here playing some day...but for now it just "looks cool" and thats enough for me 😄 (One of the NES systems is broken and will eventually be swapped out for a different system, maybe a SNES, not sure yet...) Played through Trojan to test everything, one of the few games I can 1cc, I suppose I could even try to be one of those "speed run nerds" for this game some day 😄 This one is definitely in my top 100 and its also got a Conan vibe to it (post apocalyptic Conan haha) I'm sensing a theme here... (Spoiler end game pic) Well, I don't think I'm doing anything important today so maybe I'll try to get a little more done. Still at under 20% of the room... This 1702 is next up... 5 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/354031-basement-takeover/#findComment-5301374 Share on other sites
Crazy Climber
Had nothing going on so kept organizing everything, ended up finishing quite a bit. Hooked up the N64 and Super famicom to the 1702 monitor (also a great deal from member H454!) The Famicom I wanted to hook up to my Trinitron via RF since I won't be playing it much but I've now discovered Japanese RF is a total pain in the ass and completely different from ours. Oh well, I'd just sell it and get an American SNES but I already have a famicom everdrive and super gameboy 2 so its staying. I wired the controllers through the pull out desk drawer to keep things nice and tidy 😃 Also moved my arcade 1ups to their new location. Got a nice little "arcade wall" happening... AA member @negative1 is just crushing the arcade 1up leaderboards... But, as usual I got caught up in building the room and not enjoying it. The rooms about 30% or so complete but I'm running out of stuff quick 😄 I'll spend some time playing with it and deciding what would be a good fit next...probably need some modern stuff too! 3 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/354031-basement-takeover/#findComment-5301555 Share on other sites

TrekMD
That looks amazing! I'm jealous! There are no basements in Florida. I'd do this if I had one! 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/354031-basement-takeover/#findComment-5301603 Share on other sites

Looks like you were able to clean off the tape goo on the 1702 - looks good. I guess you don't have any TVs that are new enough to tune channel 95 or 96 for the Famicom? Have you tried the channel 6 tweak? Adjusting in the modulator pot with one the plastic tuning tools. 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/354031-basement-takeover/#findComment-5301773 Share on other sites

Keir
This is awesome! At the height of my collecting (20 years ago) I would have loved a massive game room like this but didn’t have the space. Now I have the space and I’m not as interested in doing something like this for myself, but I’m enjoying seeing what you’re doing. 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/354031-basement-takeover/#findComment-5304062 Share on other sites

I'll be sure to tell my wife it's his fault 😄 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/354031-basement-takeover/#findComment-5305075 Share on other sites
Crazy Climber
Got a little more done this week. At this point I'm kind of working with what I have and what I have is Nintendo switch stuff and mario toys 😄 Also have this curio cabinet to fill with random cool stuff... I did score this "cheap cheap" plush at target... And I made a custom panel for my asteroids arcade 1up so I could shove a (mostly useless) stereo inside of it... With instant streaming these days CDs feel like checkbooks at the supermarket... That's probably it for this week, think we're hitting the state fair tomorrow but I've got a few things in the mail. Id say the room is near 50% done now 😃 2 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/354031-basement-takeover/#findComment-5305083 Share on other sites
Crazy Climber
Oh, almost forgot. +sramirez2008
Your room looks great! I have a much smaller bedroom dedicated as my Atari Room. It’s helped keep me from adding more to my collection and I’ve sold off the stuff I wasn’t really using. Like @TrekMD, we don’t have basements in the greater Houston area either. At this point I have all of the consoles that I’ve ever wanted in my collection and my spare CRTs (including my only 1702) are in the rooms closet. I prefer 14” CRTs and I have two pretty good Toshibas that allow for RF, Component and S-Video (Model 14AF44) and a 13” SONY Trinitron that’s dedicated for my Video Music (for game nights). Thanks again for sharing. I really like your setup and love your CRTs.👍🏼 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/354031-basement-takeover/#findComment-5305102 Share on other sites

Crazy Climber
Woke up early and looks like we're not hitting the fair for a few more hours so me and my daughter hit the MN Toy posse swap meet. Found a few cool things for the room... Also picked up a SNES...now, I already have a Super famicom but the guy was practically giving it away. He also completely disassembled/cleaned it, etc.. Sounds like he was the original owner too, couldn't turn it down I spent some time playing Altered beast for the sega genesis... I never beat this game back in the day, despite me playing the hell out of it for like a month straight (I got a genesis at launch and didn't have a lot of games in the beginning lol) The final stages and their weird enemies always did me in, seriously wtf is this? BUT....Thanks to the modern day internet, I discovered you can CONTINUE if you hold down A button and press start!! I finally beat the game!!! (Spoiler ending pics) I felt a little guilty...it was so much easier being able to continue. I'm still going to try to win without continuing some day... Feeling nostalgic I also gave one of the other first Genesis games I owned back in the day another try...MYSTIC DEFENDER! Such a cool unappreciated game. Has some annoying jumps that feel cheap at times but otherwise a blast to play. Made it to level 5 but ran out of continues...this one I'm beating without any tricks (although I did beat it already back in the day) Well, thats it for now... 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/354031-basement-takeover/#findComment-5305619 Share on other sites
Crazy Climber
Thoughts and prayers for the panasonic monitor... Although she has only been part of the family for a short time we have grown quite attached to this little silver box. Unfortunately upon rescuing her she had health problems...brightness issues, color issues, inability to stop rolling/focus. Well today she just shut off completely and attempts to resuscitate have not worked. Was hoping its just an on/off switch issue but I'm afraid her time in the gameroom may be coming to an end... let us remember the little Panasonic 10" color with TWO AV INPUTS! Such a rare little find and her time here in the basement was too short... 2 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/354031-basement-takeover/#findComment-5305668 Share on other sites
