I really like the first version. Are there any known issues with this model?

Mine hasn't really had many issues other than:

   - Fan gets loud over time,  periodically opening it up cleaning out the dust helps

   - Original Dual Shock 4 rubber wears off on thumbsticks,   this can be mitigated with cheap thumbstick protectors or using a newer Dual Shock that doesn't have this issue.

   - (minor annoyance) the "power" and "eject disc" buttons aren't physical buttons but hot spots on the front of the console that are easy to accidentally trigger by the slightest touch.   The later revision of the PS4 changed these to physical buttons

Some users complained about discs ejecting at "random".   seems it's more of a problem for units that sit horizontally.   Mine has always sat vertically and I never had this issue.

The OG PS4 also has and optical audio port to plug into an external audio system.  This is good for reducing audio lag in rhythm games.   The Slim removed this port.

I've been watching YouTube videos to get a feel for how the graphics may look. They don't come close to doing the system justice. I was thinking about getting a somewhat cheap gaming laptop but this does exactly what I want it to...play Doom Eternal!

New (to me) system. 😁

Yeah Youtube videos are always compressed so you don't get the full detail.   Even though I have a PS5 now,  PS4 visuals still hold up well

None that I have ever found. I have my day 1 launch model in the living room getting played to this day.

They still have it at target for 300 I can't believe it.

target ps4

But according to google.

As a result, Sony plans to continue supporting the PlayStation 4, right, until 2025. (Sony Corp.) In Sony's latest financial presentation, the company formalized its plan to cease producing games for the PlayStation 4 by 2025

So 5 is probably better for only 200 extra.

How does the original PS4 match up to a PS4 pro?

The Pro adds 4K, though it's often not true 4K, but often 1600p-1800p upscaled using some techniques to improve picture quality.   So it has some more power on-board to support that.

There are no games that are Pro-only that don't work on base PS4.   Sony doesn't allow that.    It will only give you graphics improvements in some games if you have a 4K TV.    Some games may run a little better on it with better framerate,  some might run worse (No Man's Sky at times ran worse on Pro than base PS4)

That's part of why I said to get the PS5. 4K support still depends on the game, though. The other reasons are that the PS4 is over a decade old now and will almost certainly stop being supported in terms of both customer support from Sony and software before the PS5 and that the PS5 can sometimes run PS4 games significantly better than the PS4 and PS4 Pro can, even if the game didn't get a special PS5 patch or something and the PS5 simply has enough power to take advantage of an unlocked framerate that the PS4 struggles with.

The PS5 really is the best PS4, even if it doesn't have 100% compatibility.

Yeah, it's the best PS4 for sure,  I'm still waiting for it to be a good PS5 though :(

Given the almost complete lack of PS5 exclusives 3 years into its life, we might be waiting for that for a while. Astro's Playroom was really nice, though; yes, it is a tech demo to show off the features of the system, but it was good and fun, although quite short (probably because it's a tech demo). This sort of game, the type that uses the unique features of the console and can't be done on PC or any other console, is what I want from console games. It took me about 61 minutes to beat Astro's Playroom; if they made a sequel I'd buy it, although I'd like something longer and with more replay value.

Exactly.   Of the PS5 titles I have, very few of them feel like a generation leap over PS4 games, just higher res, maybe they throw some Dual-Sense features in for good measure.   But I've yet to see a game use the Dual-Sense features as well as Astro's Playroom does.
