6th Annual Atari Homebrew Awards: Voting Information & Discussion

Recommended Posts

I didn't put proper effort in this year for the contest.

Dragon Chalice Mini might have been a good entry for me.  It's a download (optional buy-me-a-coffee) deal on itch.

I wanted to find a way to give people a digital game without irking the enthusiasts who bought physical copies of Dragon Chalice.  So, I streamlined it to be a bite sized adventure focusing on time attack gameplay.

Was there a submission deadline for getting it on the official downloads?  This year I'll try to be more proactive :)

There's no need for submitting your game as we include all games posted between Jan 1st and Dec 31st! 🙂

Although I didn't specifically list Dragon Chalice Mini in the Atari 2600 2023 listings I took the game to be a variant of Dragon Chalice, which was eligible and entered in for nomination this year.

EDIT: I stand corrected by @littaum! It was on the 2023 list under 'Completed'. 🙂

Looks like Dragon Chalice and Mini Dragon Chalice were both mentioned in the 2023 games list.

EDIT:  Nevermind, already answered. :P

Actually one of the AHA games even made the pre-NES top 10 this week. Since the tracker is open to everyone, feel free to join jgkspsx's effort. I'm not saying that the game you play the longest is the one you will end up liking the most (remember that The Lawnmower Man on SNES has over 14700 minutes recorded in the tracker), but it might give a form of "people's choice" if the reported number of minutes is compiled at the end of the awards season.

@ZeroPage Homebrew  Hello James, How are the AHA's going?  I voted for the Atari 2600 games last night, BTW.  And I cancelled that other thread I made, BTW.  (After talking to the guys.  They pretty much took me out to the woodshed over it.)  So I hope there are no hard feelings.  I have a question for you.  Is there an active thread anywhere where people can discuss the Atari 2600 nominees?  If not, could one be created?  And would it be alright if we just had an ordinary discussion thread, not a Time Tracker thread?  I don't really want to write a report or count minutes.  Just a place where we all can discuss the nominees.  Thank you.

You bet! You can discuss the games in each of the voting threads or generally here. Happy voting!

VOTING ALERT!

The poll for Best Atari 2600 Graphics (Original) needed to be recreated due to the game 'Tober's Nightmare' missing from the options. We have reset the votes to allow people to re-evaluate the poll with the additional option.

I apologize for this mistake and I encourage you to revisit the poll and vote with the new option added.

Huge thank you to @JeremiahK for pointing this out!

Yes, those are the games that were voted to the top by the Nomination Committee out of all the qualifying Original Atari 2600 Homebrew completed in 2023.

That is correct. Keep in mind that nobody is saying that any of those games that didn't make the vote are not deserving of high praise. The accomplishments of those programmers are not to be understated and the fact they did not get nominated should not diminish your enjoyment or celebration of how fun they are. Continue to play them, I definitely will!

Just a heads up that Spies in the Night 2 was completed in 2019 and nominated for three Atari Homebrew Awards that year. Carrot Kingdom was released on cartridge three years ago in 2021.

In an ideal world the Nomination Committee and everyone voting would have access to a physical or final binary copy of every game released in 2023, but unfortunately that's not practical and I'm sure the developers and distributors would not be interested in providing everyone a free copy of their games. This is the reason we provide the newest public binary or link to a video of gameplay of the homebrew. We definitely don't want to exclude any games from competition due to people not having full access to the retail copy.

This has been a highly discussed topic in the past and we have so far settled on the shipping date or the first date the general public has been able to get their hands on it. It's hard to predict what the future holds for a game that is released in limited quantity and that may be the only release it gets. I feel that to remove a fully released game from competition because it only had a limited run would be extremely exclusionary. Each developer and distributor choose their own path of how they release their games, whether it's only a limited run of 10 or in unlimited numbers. We have found so far that using the first public availability of a game puts everyone on an even playing field.

Thank you so much, it's always nice to hear positive feedback! It's an enormous undertaking for myself and for each of the members of the Nomination Committee to evaluate hundreds of Atari homebrew releases each year. There will always be criticism of the outcome of any subjective voting process but we continue to re-evaluate our methods each to year and strive to make the event as equitable as possible.

We strive to have a diverse Nomination Committee made up of both developers and dedicated players of homebrew. We are also always looking for more people to join the Nomination Committee that would be willing to put in the time and energy to evaluate the hundreds of homebrew that are released each yet. It is NOT an easy or quick task and I can't thank enough the people who help in this undertaking each year.

Robot Zed is one of my favourites of the year too! I'm a sucker for a great platformer game and I'm so happy it was nominated for Best Music + Sound. We have a diverse group of people on the Nomination Committee which will result in an array of opinions, so you can never really predict what will rise to the top. We're always looking for more people to join the Nomination Committee to help with evaluation and provide more opinions on the games.

That's an interesting idea. I suspect the feasibility of people voting in an additional 21 polls, which would involve every single game released in the year, would be overwhelming for both myself and the public, not to mention I don't have the resources to award 21 more trophies/certificates for the new categories.

There are reasons companies only usually offer 3 choices when the release a new line of product, people get overwhelmed with choice. I think that presenting people with 42 polls would result in a sharp decline in participation. I would also suspect that people would not have the time to evaluate every single release that year now that every game released would be part of one of the polls.

I'm going to chime in here, and BTW, I do appreciate those that do think that Robot Zed should had been included in 2600 Homebrew of the year, I really appreciate that.  I did talk about putting a full BIN up for the people who were voting on the finalists, but then decided against it, since it was kind of an iffy thing to be doing with how the rules were, and since the game is being sold on the store, I didn't know how Albert would had felt about it.  So, I decided that my video that I had made of my game on youtube, showcasing the playthrough would had been enough as that was allowed so people could at least see it.  Perhaps there could be something done in the future that would allow the people who choose to be able to be able to play the games for nomination.

That's a great idea and might be possible. We have a number of the nominated games available to be played on the PlusCart, FujiNet and Argon. It will mostly come down to how comfortable the developer and distributor is to having the full game accessible on those platforms and how 'copyable' it is from each. Other platforms might be possible in the future to have the full game temporarily playable during the voting for evaluation!

Congratulations again on your nomination!

A recent demo would have been sufficient, IMO. And I don't think anyone would have objected.

Oh there was in the forums, but it was just a 2 level demo so people could get a feel for it, and not a full on demo where you could play everything.

I only found a rather old demo. Do you meant that one?

There was another one that was posted that was a more recent one which basically was a stripped down version of the full game.  Basically, the official demo.  But, it's fine, we can move on now.

Still too bad.

@ZeroPage Homebrew did you miss that demo or was it not eligible?

@Sprybug Do you have a link for the posted demo you're talking about? it's definitely not too late to update the vote with new information and alert everyone to the changes. Below is the 2023 games listing showing the link to newest binary I know of from Mar 27, 2022:

This is so weird.  I swear I posted a two level demo at one time.  I remember making it and I swear I posted it.  Well, darn.  The 2022 binary is the version before I changed it to more of a mission style game, but you still have the same feel of it.

Hm, it seems that most categories are lagging behind this year. When comparing the votes of the 5th and the 6th awards one week before the end , ~260 votes (ignoring the reset Graphics category) are missing. I hope the votes will catch up during the next 7 days.🤞

~30 minutes before the voting closes, we have exactly 100 votes less than last year. But back then some votes got removed (@ZeroPage Homebrew do you remember why and how many?), so we are a bit closer than 100.

Note: Atari 2600 Best Graphics (Original) got reset at Feb 9th. In the end ~15 votes got lost that way.
