In the past, I'd always bought literally every homebrew all the time, yadda yadda... but I think I'm going to be a bit more selective when I buy homebrews / new game releases. I love the 2600... but I'm not about to start becoming a serious collector. I have 200+ carts that I acquired over the years, but only a few dozen in the box. Some of the new Atari 2600 games are really nice, but it's got to be a super game for me to put in the effort. I did buy Berzerk Enhanced... and if they did a new Combat, I'd do that too. Or even a new Maze Craze.

I have yet to buy a Homebrew. At least physically, anyway. I have a few on my VCS I can play.

I'm not huge into collecting either. I only buy stuff I intend to play. The only exception to that is if I get game lots on Ebay, but sometimes that's the best way to get a deal on a game. I do like buying new stuff, though. It's nice being able to just pull the cartridge out of the box and put it in the 2600+ without worrying how clean it is. Berzerk is probably one of my favorite games for the 2600. I have an original cartridge, but I figured it will be fun to have the voices and diagonal shooting would come in handy sometimes. Besides, $30 for a new cartridge with the box isn't bad. And, Mr. Run and Jump is such a fun game on the VCS and on PC, so I figure it could be a blast on the 2600 too.

I think in this case... it was worth it...

The diagonal shooting does make it a bit more fun. The talking only happens in between levels though (from what I can tell). And that's totally ok... it's still cool.

lol. if you have "200" carts it's a bit too late to worry about being a 'serious' collector.

Hahah... yeah, I realized that when I was writing it... but they aren't really "collectible" condition. It's basically two bins (see below) where I have a little over 200 Atari 2600 carts stuffed in there end to end. There were two places I used to go to back in the late 90s. One was called the $wap $hop, and the other was called All Books & Records. At the Swap Shop, I'd go there early on a Saturday and they had all these people who had cleaned out an estate sale... and in most cases, there would be lots and lots of Atari stuff... everything from 5200 to 2600... but sometimes ENTIRE BINS of stuff that these people didn't know what they had or cared what they had. I remember buying a large tupperware container of Atari stuff. It had some 30 Atari games in it, with a 4 port 5200 and a 2-port 5200 with dozens of controllers sticking out the top, and some other stuff. Got it all for $20 bucks.

Then at All Books & Records, they had several massive bins full of 2600 games. They were more or less separated in bins from 25 cents all the way up to $1 for games that were more rare... with a hand full behind the counter that were $2.50 or $5 bucks... like Big Bird's Egg Catch or something, lol. But I basically bought everything I could. I then started printing out a list, and buying anything I didn't see on my list. Hahah... so I guess it's collecting, but not like you'd typically see... I just wanted to be able to play the games...

I’m creeping up on 150 2600 carts and I don’t consider myself a serious collector either. Lol

Over a hundred of my games came from flea markets in the 90’s, and most only cost me $1-$5 each. It was more cheap gaming than serious collecting to me. I have hardly any boxes or instructions. Just a lot of loose carts. Haha

Now I’m in the mode of trying to fill a few gaps with games that look fun. I’ve also been replacing any old soiled labels (mostly Activision) with repros. For me, being 100% original is less important than clean and nice looking.

All this makes me a vintage gamer. Not a collector. 😜
