I think it's just the old carts in general. I needed to clean all of my NES and Genesis carts when I dug those systems out earlier this year. went through quite a bit of alcohol and swabs, but they all work now.

As far as my set up, thank you. Here's a wider view, plus my big boys (and a bunch of stuff in the corner that really needs to be organized):

Nice collection of 'maze shooters' there. I don't yet have Marauder or Room of Doom, so I'll need to keep an eye for them (and if the prices aren't too insane that is).

A game I got recently for my growing collection of 2600 games is Dark Chambers and I really like it. It's somewhat like a crude / early version of Gauntlet (which I guess the 7800 version is more closer to Gauntlet, but availability wise it seems quite limited and the couple of options I seen on Ebay, the prices were WAY too high for me).

Anyways, I find the 2600 version of Dark Chambers quite enjoyable and somewhat of more relaxed dungeon-crawler / maze-shooter.

My first time playing 2600 Dark Chambers was on the Evercade Atari collection 2 and it’s definitely one of the better late releases. Really enjoyed the 7800 version in Atari 50 as well.

I just remembered that I've played the Intellivision version of Night Stalker on Evercade and I enjoyed it

That's how I played it.  The game is on the INTV volume 1.  It's a fun game.

I was flying to visit family and used my phone with the free internet to browse eBay for cheap 7800 carts.

I snagged a buy it now for Centipede 7800 for $14 US, plus shipping.  I thought that was a great price and bought it mid-flight.

Technology is amazing sometimes!

Ordered both of these on Ebay. Both come with the Atari Force comics, so my 5 comic collection will be complete. I know the Star Raiders keypad doesn't work, but the game wasn't my main reason for buying it. But hopefully the future firmware update fixes the issue.

Nice! I was missing the Defender comic and recently won a CIB (eBay). I have both (Atari & Sears) box variants of Star Raiders. My Atari variant is Sealed, so I play this Sears variant. Both have their comics.

I have also been collecting single screen maze shooters, and I have all of these, apart from Room of Doom...

You are missing Night Stalker/Dark Cavern.

EDIT

Although it's more like Pac-Man, you can actually shoot in Alien.

I just ordered myself Dark Cavern.

I'll let you know what I think of it when it arrives

Enjoy mate! Let me know how you rank these games.

And I have an update... I ordered Room of Doom, from Australia! 🤣 It was the cheapest copy I could find. Probably be mid January before I see that one. 🤷🏻🤣

Nice!

Late January we should both create an updated tier list for 2600 maze / arena shooters, to compare

Sounds good to me.

I was just playing Nightstalker on my Gamestion Pro (I just set it up, a birthday present to myself for today!) and I noticed that I only had that as a PAL ROM and the ROM I had for Dark Cavern was NTSC. Now I don't know if that is because they were only released that way in those regions or just what I have.

Playing the ROMs I have, Dark Cavern was definitely superior, the screen filled more of the screen and it ran noticeably faster. The upshot being I am now really looking forward to my NTSC Dark Cavern. 👍🏻

The one I've ordered is Dark Cavern and definitely NTSC. I'm glad I'm getting the better version!

I really enjoyed Dark Cavern (Night Stalker on Intellivision had more detailed graphics, but that would have necessitated buying an intellivision and using that controller 😒). The fact that you can run out of ammo and the robots which shoot are as quick on the trigger as you makes for a challenge.

According to this book, Dark Cavern is better than Berserk or Wizard of Worimage.png.78eb24c86ef9831349473fcddb1ac983.png

FWIW, this is a really good book in IMO.

Agreed, an excellent book. I've got a few other books by the same publisher (NeoGeo, King of Fighters) and they have all been great

Need to pull the book off the shelf again soon 🤗

I just ordered Dark Cavern NTSC for 4.99$

So if it is declared correctly, it won't get stuck in customs😬

Well, in total 25.48€ but it's shipping from USA to GER😊

It was impressive to see it running much faster on youtube than the PAL Nightstalker, which would cost me at least the same, shipping from France🙃

Now waiting for

TRESHOLD PAL(?) from GER

Stargunner NTSC from UK

Dark Cavern NTSC from US

Last time I had this exitement when I started to collect 2008. Never had my own 2600 as a child and got a broken one given to me for free. So I did the repair and started to collect carts, later the 7800 joined.

In 2008 Radio X had a big summer party and as Dr. Pong we let people play Atari 2600 on big screen games (TV tuner, projector).

It was a great summer night, having food and drinks and watching 20 somethings playing Atari🤙

Nice memories. 😊

Yeah, NTSC Dark Cavern does seem much better than the slow PAL Nightstalker.

I too am waiting for Dark Cavern and Stargunner, I just love shooting shit on the 2600. 🤷🏻🤣 Enjoy your games!

So it agreed with me then! 👌🏻🤟🏻😊🤪

I've seen this book pop up on YouTube videos, I really should get one. I have one called the art of atari or something (I'll check it when I get home).

Hey all. Great seeing the rare stuff. I just restarted collecting with the anticipation of the 2600+ coming out. Here are a few of the rare/weird ones: Frankenstein, Space Cavern and Tapper. Frankenstein is kind of like pitfall but one screen (I think) there is a “horrifying” scene when the monster gets loose he comes charging at the screen. I had never heard of space cavern before it’s a space shooting game with interesting up /down for shooting left and right game play. I got Tapper in a lot on EBay for a great price. I see it going for a lot solo, so feel lucky to have purchased this favorite arcade game.

Nice. I have all three. Space Cavern is a so, so shooter, but Tapper and Frankenstein's Monster are really good.
