Someone might pay you a million for it unopened!!!

Well..too late...

Does it have that 'new computer' smell?  :)

Sort of, I'll let it go slightly used for 1/2 Mil!! 😄

You lucky duck!  Great that it still works after all these years.

K-R.

When it comes to the TI99/4A I would have put bets on this working versus not. In my experience the TI99/4A is one of the most reliable computers of the era along with the Vic-20. Sure I have had one or two over the years with problems (one did not post, the others bad keyboard membranes) but my overall impression has been positive. I actually bought two "untested" just for parts and those worked too ;)

The only worry I would have had with this one is the keyboard as it is not one of the good ones.

Ah "Beginner's Basic"...  I remember like it was yesterday, working my way through it and making Mr. Bojangles dance.  Such heady and exciting times!

Thanks for the nostalgia trip.  🙂

I still remember me, as a 12-year-old boy, showing the output to my parents: "Look, it prints my name on TV!" (It was the first program with INPUT.)

Well I just tested the keyboard in TIBASIC and everything seems to work accept the cap lock key. It does not allow me to type capitol letter. I have to use the shift keys to do so. Will have to examine that. Being a virgin TI99, I am thinking of using a Rave AT keyboard adapter on it anyhow, as I have two. I just have to decide whether I want to keep it pristine or mount a F18 or Tang in it, and maybe the Rave. Everthing else can hang off the side.

This is like reaching back into time.  The last time that computer saw daylight was about 40 years ago.  It was boxed in 1980-something, then suddenly the box opened and there you were.  A Rip van Winkle story, of sorts; the computer a Schrodinger's computer, if you will.

For the last 40 years that box sat somewhere, maybe it was moved about, but there was no real telling of whether that computer was in there or not.  Was it stuck in 1980-something, or was it traveling through time with us?  Cannot be certain until you open the box and observe it.

It's been about 5 years now I guess, but I also bought a never opened console on Ebay (though a beige one, because that's the version I had as a child) and it, too, worked perfectly and still does. It's back in its box right now while I have my "The VIC20" hooked up, but I do get it back out from time to time.  Very cool to have that experience of being the first person to use a 40-year old computer.

I bought a beige one too, about 3 years ago that was supposedly never opened. But the box was in rough shape and the unit had been sealed in a plastic bag, like a freezer meat vacuum bag and heat sealed. It did not work, I made a claim and got my money back. The seller said not to ship it back, so one of these days I'm gonna open it up and see if about fixing it.

I recently, tried to acquire some TI official brown box warranty units never opened from old warehouse in Ottawa, but the seller sadly found some one to pick up the pallet, most likely they will appear on eBay at highway robbery prices again.

Wow, I had an eerily similar experience to yours Ricky, and just about at the same time you acquired your most recent gem, not 3 years ago.  It was still in its clam wedge white styrofoam, not a nick, ding or blemish in sight on the unit itself, 100% pristine cosmetically... I excitedly went to try it out... and ... <insert Price is Right buzzer sound>   Meanwhile, another beige one I acquired looked like it's been through hell.. and working flawlessly.  So it's true, never judge a book, erm, TI, by its cover.  :)

Pics of the date code and of it working with an Ubergrom I built, new new tech, meets new old tech.

Reading this nearly with tears in my eyes, I want to go home to my own time so badly. I hate being stuck in the future, I don't belong here.

I nickname your computer "Buck Rogers".  ;-)

Or, maybe, Rip van Winkle.

I'd go in a heartbeat, especially if I could take my TI toys with me.  Anyone have a flux capacitor to lend me for 40-year trip?

K-R.
