Is there ongoing development for Arcade Jason's idea of using LCD panels as digital overlays?

I remember seeing this a while back and now that I have a Vectrex, am more invested.   it seems like such a simple idea that just requires cheap panels and basic SoC display drivers.

As far as I've heard no one seems to be working any further on this sort of project. Jason and Brandon both have some documentation. One of the Kevin's was the first to do with a Digital Picture Frame.
