Week of 2/26/24 - 3/3/24

I haven't given up on Might and Magic. Despite having put over 66 hours into the game it's still quite compelling, which is a testament to the quality of the game (most games don't keep my attention nearly that long). However, I have been intentionally avoiding it because I don't want to get sucked in for hours; I just don't have that kind of time right now.

Atari 2600

River Patrol - 20

Robot Tank - 10

Space Invaders - 10

Commodore 64

Might and Magic - 25

iOS

Duolingo - 38

Jumbline 2 - 44

Total time = 147 minutes

Game Gear

Wizard Pinball 3 <- I technically played a Game Gear to SMS conversion via the Mega Everdrive.  Graphics were messed up a bit.

Adv of Batman and Robin 6

Dragon's Fury 34

Half Life Alyx 575

Bruce Lee 26 <- Homebrew

Ninja, The 109

XBox Series S/X

Lara Croft Temple of Osiris 113

Plate Up! 67

My nephew and I finished the story in "Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris."  I like this game and the prequel called "Guardian of Light."  This type of low commitment coop game with some variety of core gameplay elements is really fun.

My times for

Feb 27-Mar 3:

I meant to include screenshots from my horrible RB College PostSeason figures, but those screenshots are on another phone. I might include them later. I have been tracking stats from season to season since S11 and game to game since about S17, just for fun. Started a new free game from Netflix offered on Android/iOS. I really liked the TMNT Shredders Revenge beat’um up, and the Into the Breach strategy game. Reigns3K gameplay seems a bit random so far. The object is to not have any of your 4 gauges fill up, or your citizens revolt and kill you. So far I haven’t figured out how to predict which of your two answers will likely make a gauge increase.

Android

RB College - 10 min

Reigns3K - 45 min

Atari 2600 (Stella)

Jaw Breaker - 15 min

Quite an unusual week for me. Yes, I realize I say that every week.

Arcade:

Navarone - 20 min

IMG_7280.thumb.jpeg.7d09bbe94eeecb2201e97399129ee839.jpeg

Sly Spy - 46 min

IMG_7167.thumb.jpeg.ac976bbd6b8c001089a017c9bde8f36d.jpeg

It's got it all: jetpacks, sharks with laser eyes, low-rent substitutes for Jaws and Odd Job, everything! You should try it.

Atari Lynx:

2048 - 5 min

IMG_7066.thumb.jpeg.b8db050dc88fc0f1843c464f24beee86.jpeg

Captain Harlynx - 20 min

IMG_7414.thumb.jpeg.be5945c1aa2ea77a007b0f27b63d3e46.jpeg

Took a few tries but I beat the demo.

Pit-Fighter - 110 min

IMG_7081.thumb.jpeg.c5079f8994eab77dab1dc47f24561040.jpeg
I played more of this in the last week than I had in my whole lifetime before. It is not a good game but it is fun and the Lynx port is a remarkable achievement.

Scooternia - 30 min

IMG_7133.thumb.jpeg.c12653102e3fb9873ad333226a9f149b.jpeg
Very fun scrolling dodge em up!

Browser:

Paku Paku - 26 min

Commodore 64:

Lee - 90 min

IMG_7181.jpeg

Beat the game once using save states and then once without, and almost got to the final gauntlet on the much harder second loop.

Subterranea - 15 min

IMG_7190.jpeg

Fun but exceptionally plain and basic shooter.

Winter Games - 12 min

IMG_7194.jpeg

Very fun set of events. Winter games were always my favorites among these minigame anthologies.

GCE Vectrex:

Armor Attack - 10 min

IMG_7109.thumb.jpeg.5185255cc782ba6cbb3b6d09a180475c.jpeg

Beluga Dreams - 15 min

IMG_7112.thumb.jpeg.2b308c98aa812fe08ff84d49d6d82eeb.jpeg

Magnavox Odyssey 2:

Alien Invaders - Plus! - 15 minIMG_7137.thumb.jpeg.8213db862bc44d5e7983f5d94f521961.jpeg

If you don't know this game you don't know what a proud achievement it is to score 3 against the CPU.

Microsoft Xbox 360:

I blew the dust off and started the engine and everything is still working great for now...

0D Beat Drop - 20 min

IMG_7233.thumb.jpeg.b240d56731d8f8407b17119c1046461b.jpeg
This is one of the truly exclusive 360 games. It is also just not very good.

1942: Joint Strike - 25 min
A very good remake of 1942 by Digital Eclipse. You can get the Capcom Digital Collection disc with tons of great games for $30 or buy them individually for $10-$15 each. I recommend the former.

Aces of the Galaxy - 15 min

IMG_7225.thumb.jpeg.d19f1e96208bb4c5dd2880212e0513c0.jpeg

I am surprised at how well this game reviewed because to me it seems deadly boring and the levels just go on and on. Maybe it gets better after the demo?

Apple Jack 2 - 35 min

IMG_7206.thumb.jpeg.182128d31f12692003d1263edf4115ae.jpeg
Most of which was spent playing this one level over and over again.

Asteroids Do Concern Me - 30 min

IMG_7205.thumb.jpeg.8a9344a57bee8c3cb1378a874f98af5e.jpeg

A hilarious SFCave/Helicopter Game knockoff. Another lost XBLIG game. It kills me that more of the successful games of this line haven't been ported to Steam.

Beat Hazard - 15 min

IMG_7213.thumb.jpeg.e94dd9110ae6f9f631d8d65b04b2435a.jpeg

This fantastic twin stick shooter from the long-dead Xbox Live Indie Games initiative allows you to play all of your favorite music as a shooter. It works very well, not all that differently than E4.

Black Knight Sword - 20 min

IMG_7219.thumb.jpeg.965b55c4d221efb99c72531a84543c65.jpeg

Remember when Microsoft was trying to succeed in Japan? Those were the days. This otherwise undistinguished hack and slash game gets a lot of mileage from that signature Suda51 Grasshopper Manufacture weirdness. It reviewed middlingly at the time but I enjoyed it a lot more than the reviewers did and still do today. I bet it would be better regarded today.

Bubble Bobble Neo! - 10 min

IMG_7229.thumb.jpeg.7c07531a8cef3a34a13ace85593234aa.jpeg

A fairly undistinguished remake of the original arcade game... except for the level packs stuffed with extra levels.

Every Extend Extra Extreme - 75 min

IMG_7256.thumb.jpeg.acb855835f039013fa1102f385bfdda1.jpeg

Somehow it looks much plainer than the PSP original, but still plays like a dream. One of the very best Xbox 360 games.

Mattel Intellivison:

Auto Racing - 11 min

IMG_7014.jpeg
Steering is a real challenge in this game but I am getting there:

Motocross - 10 min

IMG_7017.jpeg

I am not good at any of these isometric INTV racers but I am particularly bad at this one.

Mountain Madness Pro Skiing - 5 min

IMG_7020.jpeg
I really like this game even if it isn't quite as fluid as Activision's Skiing.

Reversi - 12 min

IMG_7028.jpeg
I was happy with a draw here.

Stadium Mud Buggies - 15 min

IMG_7019.jpeg

Star Strike - 18 min

IMG_7025.jpeg
Beat the game. With save states. I am not ashamed.

NEC PC Engine/Turbografx 16:

Blazing Lazers - 20 min

IMG_7149.jpeg
Still an amazing game. One of the best shooters of its era, along with its siblings Zanac, Gun-Nac, and the Aleste games.

Hana Taaka Daka - 20 min

IMG_7140.jpeg
The cartridge adapters for my Analogue Pocket came and I am pleased to report the actual game does not suffer from the game pause bug that the PCE core does.

Nintendo Entertainment System:

Jim Power - 110 min

IMG_7161.jpeg
By far the best version of Jim Power. Cheap deaths are still here but in much smaller quantities than on other systems, and combined with infinite continues makes you want to keep playing and playing.

Nintendo Switch:

Another Code ReCollection - 170 min

IMG_7275.thumb.jpeg.d4913185a23844e4121238263fc02ba9.jpeg

Got to the end of chapter 2.

qrth-phyl - 15 min

IMG_6997.thumb.jpeg.7e2bf83271bce414e2976189d5281668.jpeg

A game name after my own heart, this is actually just Snake in 3D.

qump2 - 35 min

IMG_7282.thumb.jpeg.b6bac43516aad16e3b27aaa61ac31a82.jpeg

A really fun and challenging Pong

exploration game. If you ever played the old Titus game Titan, this is probably what they were hoping to make.

R-Type Dimensions - 60 min

IMG_6965.thumb.jpeg.e65e00e4fef190b29a9f116d319bb679.jpeg
Made it fairly far into R-Type 1.

Suika Game - 5 min

IMG_6992.thumb.jpeg.04c97f7e011ff401071ebe0ea5a23d8a.jpeg

It supports multiple players now!

Tetris 99 - 25 min

It looks like you may have forgotten to log time for TMNT and Into the Breach.  I THINK you were saying above that you played both of those.

Sorry, should have been more clear. I just played those in the past, so I downloaded a handful of other free games options and actual played Reign3K. No additional time to log.

Might as well include some screenshots from Retro Bowl College, S22. Truly awful results. 3 losses. A QB with only a 76% completion rate, 9 intercepts and 7 sacks.. Average yardage for my WRs was also additional low. I did recruit an OL star player, which is one of the more useless positions.

I haven't played as much as you, but I did sense there was some flux in the way the difficulty would spike and fall.

I found that with a stud OL, I can at least pickup a few extra yards with my RB when I need it.  Cuts down on the negative passing plays.

This week I played:

Super Mario Bros.: Level-Headed for NES - 177 minutes

Zelda Randomizer for NES - 889 minutes

X-Men Legends for PS2 - 447 minutes

Progress:

Mario: I completed 9 games from my 3rd set of roms with original graphics and normal difficulty.

Zelda: I completed 4 games that have remixed dungeons, secrets, item locations and random playable characters. In games where you play as a monster, Zelda is the final boss and you save Ganon.

X-Men Legends: I started a new save file and completed the U.S.S. Arbiter mission where Gambit is first playable.

Definitely having a stud OL as well as a good TE help the running game.

Beware - there is a "legendary" bug in this version.  If your item storage boxes are full you'll have bad things happen.  I think it is an inability to save the game!  I remember distinctly being very desperate to save our progress only to find online this issue and working around it.
