A small week for gaming for me this first week of the new year, but I did manage to finish Alien Hominid on the GameCube and started in on my yearly playthrough of Alien: Isolation on the Switch. Still slowly working my way through Ocarina of Time on the side, but I know I'll finish it eventually :)

On a side note, a couple days ago I finally finished saving up and purchased an AYN Odin 2 Pro so soon I'll be able to play the entire GameCube and PlayStation 2 libraries to my heart's content, and upscaled to 1080p in both handheld mode and docked on the TV like a Nintendo Switch! It should take about two weeks to arrive in the mail, but expect to see quite a bit of GameCube time from me this year!

Game Boy Color
Monopoly - 73 minutes

GameCube
Alien Hominid - 63 minutes

Nintendo 64
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - 144 minutes

Nintendo Switch
Alien Isolation - 55 minutes

So, is the GBC version of Monopoly that good?  I ask as I know that the NES version is supposed to be an excellent rendition, but haven't played either of the two.  Any insight would be appreciated.

20. Game Gear (5 games) - 72 min.

The revamped gameplay tracker starts off with a good mix of classic and modern, both on the individual side and for systems (about 24/14 between classic and modern systems). Mario Golf is the first to become the most played of the week, and Might & Magic takes the pre-NES title. While the Xbox 360 is the most played, it isn't without challenge from Game Boy Color and NES/Famicom.

No less than three classic games enter the 1000 Minute Club:

#545 Tennis (NES/Famicom) - 1190 min.

#546 Alien (Atari 2600) - 1003 min.

#547 Galaxian (Atari 8-bit) - 1012 min.

And yeah, it took my computer 42 seconds to sort the Excel sheet with 14000 rows. Since I never upgraded my computer last year, perhaps this year it is due?

I don't know if it's the best version of Monopoly or not, but the Game Boy Color version is my personal favorite! It's pretty similar to the NES version but with cleaner more vibrant graphics and a slower pacing. The NES version is really frenetic with how fast the dice roll, how fast the pieces move, and how fast the computer jumps through menus and selects options. It's hard for me to keep track of what's going on and who owns what in the NES version, so I appreciate the slower and more relaxing pace of the Game Boy Color version.

The GBC version also has more menu options than the SNES, Genesis, and GBA versions and the ability to trade or mortgage properties at any time, which I also appreciate. I haven't played every single console port of Monopoly, but of the ones I have played the Game Boy Color version is by far my favorite. :)

Thanks for the information.  I very much appreciate and will have to give it a go sometime.

Atari 8-bit:
Ski-It - 30 min.
White Circus - 12 min.

Browser based:
Paku Paku - 33 min.

The A8 HSC has begun with a pre-round where we play the very difficult Ski-It. For compensation, I tried to load Olympic Skier but it didn't load this time, so I settled for a short round of White Circus. On the modern side, the 1-dimensional game Paku Paku was mentioned in a parallel thread to this, so I got lost for a total of half an hour in this interesting Pac-Man variation, which would be perfect for making retro versions of.

Here are my times for this past week of January 8th through 14th, 2024:

Sorry, this week I didn't get to play anything. It's been the first week after a holiday break from work, and on top of that work in the flat of my deceased father has started with an electrical check on Tuesday and then the decluttering starting on Thursday. So I didn't have nearly as much time as in the last weeks.

Our own @Arlasoft has ported it to C64 already: https://arlagames.itch.io/paku-paku-c64

I almost cracked 10k. I think I would do better on PC.

The C64 version seems harder... that may be lag in the browser emulator, though.

Oh. I thought that browser game was at least a few years old, but I see it got released right at the start of this year. Besides the C64 port, I saw versions for the Casio PB-100 calculator and Spectrum Next as well.

Jan 8 - 14: Spent a lot of free time setting up the SegaCD partition (@jgkspsx, thanks for the suggestions) of the LegendsFB, so not as much playing as I would like. With the 2600 HSC restarting, got some keyboard play in, as the AFB X is still boxed up somewhere. I prefer a CX40 or a keyboard over a gamepad when playing for a high score.

Android

RB College - 270 min

Spoiler

Finished out 2 seasons. Seasons 9&11 ended the way they normally do. Many of my 4-5 Star players are suspended for horrible grades, and I usually lose the last game of the post season by a couple points. Season 10 was rough though, lost almost all the post season bowl games. For one of those though, I think the computer "cheated," with a Touchdown and then onside kick recovery to make up a 14 point deficit. The new 13th season is going to start out rough, with half the team suspended, a new QB, and only a RB. Did pick up a K though to get a few missing Achievements.

Atari 2600 - (Stella 6.2.1)

Space Invaders HSC - 59 min

Took a while to get back in the groove. I remembered being able to race the aliens to the right and being able to play indefinitely (at least on B-diff with smaller turrets), but didn't remember just being able to hold the button down to auto-fire.

Sega CD - (LegendsFB)

Final Fight CD - 5 min

Time Gal - 30 min. Didn't really "play" this one. Just abused the rewind feature to watch all the death animations and the ending. When I picked up a used SegaCD in 2000 this was one of the games I purchased the system for (loved the FMV, cartoon reflex testers, although the SegaCD is a huge video downgrade from the LaserDisc originals) This one feels like it lacks a lot of death animations (compared to Dragons Lair), with multiple mistakes during a scene usually resulting in the same video. Did particularly like the Cave Man death after the Timestop, choosing to shoot. I had forgotten about it, and it got a chuckle out of me

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for GameCube - 172 minutes

Progress:

I played through the Dark story only to find out that because of the way I used save states, the memory card save function stopped working halfway through. For next week's stats you will see the time for replaying that part through finishing the final story.

Only a couple games for me this week, though I do have a new handheld to talk about! A few weeks ago I picked up an Anbernic RG ARC-D and I really like it! It's basically a modern Sega Nomad in it's design, with the addition of a Select button as well as L1/L2 and R1/R2, and an RK3566 processor that's powerful enough to play everything up through and including original PlayStation full speed no problemo and a very nice looking 4" 480p 4:3 aspect ratio screen that my camera really can't do justice. You can tell Anbernic put a ton of work into getting the controls just right, because it feels exactly like an original 6 button Sega Genesis controller in the feel of the buttons and D-pad as well as the texture of the plastic.

They just absolutely nailed that classic Sega controller feel, and I think this is going to be my new favorite way to play Sega Genesis, Sega CD, and 32X games. It can play some Sega Saturn as well, though it's not quite powerful enough to play the entire Saturn library full speed. I also really like the 720p HDMI out for playing on the big screen and just using the handheld as a controller. My only complaint about it is that the battery life isn't quite as long as some of my other retro handhelds, but you'll still get a good 4 hours or so of playtime out of it before needing to plug it in to charge. All in all it's just a really lovely Sega style device, and for about $100 I'd recommend it to any Sega Genesis fan looking to give emulation a try :)

Week of 1/8/24 - 1/14/24

It's great to have the 2600 HSC back, and even better to see so many new people! However, all these new people are putting my Dig Dug scores to shame. Meanwhile, I'm still at 51% completion in M&M. It hasn't gone up because I discovered a bunch of new areas which increased the total number of squares. I'm also working less on exploration and more on completing quests, many of which involve returning to areas I've already been.

Dig Dug - 40

Space Invaders - 45

Commodore 64

Might and Magic - 360
