I need help understanding error codes when using my PEB disk drive.

Recommended Posts

The two digit code comes in two parts - the first digit is the operation, the second is the code.

I don't have the first digit codes handy, but the second:

0 - Device not found (ie: dsk1 instead of DSK1, or other typo)

1 - Write protected

2 - Bad attribute (like mismatched record type)

3 - Illegal operation (like saving to the thermal printer)

4 - Buffer (or disk) full

5 - Read past End of File

6 - Device error (usually physical - bad floppy)

7 - File error - anything else

For 6, make sure the disk was formatted. If it used to be, it may have become corrupted.

I found I get that "66" error if I  try formatting a double-sided double density disc when it's actually a single-sided single density disc , it physically can't be done, I mean maybe you can flip it upside down I'm not sure I haven't tried that..

I just know that's a bad error a hardbreak error.

Is this in BASIC?  What is the error code?  Also, are you sure you're using the right syntax?  OLD DSK#.<filename> should load and SAVE DSK#.<filename> should save in BASIC (both Extended and stock BASIC).

I can pull programs off the floppy disk, but can not save to a disk. HELP please?  I get errors when trying to save.  THis is on my TI 994a computer.

I would bet the disk is WRITE PROTECTED

I am not sure where to type to respond to all these comments, so I will try here.  As to the 6 error code, not an issue.  I load OLD DSK1.XXX from a working floppy.  I try to SAVE DSK1.XXX on same floppy.  That is my issue.  The floppy is formatted and working to load programs. Yes in Extended basic.  For the one who commented on the double or single sided, I HAVE notched the other side of disks and use the back side, but that is not my issue now.

I've seen where the write protect switch or led/opto are bad. This causes the disk to think it's always write protected

you can usually test with a multimeter to determine if it is bad.

these drives are over 40 years old at this point..  some maintenance is required

Any other help from anyone? dhe thanks for the link.  I have that somewhere.  Still having problems.  I wonder if need to open the drive and try to clean heads?

I was getting a “x6” error code and discovered that there was a problem in the firehose cable that prevented data from being written to the floppy.
