Today, I discovered this intriguing text adventure system called "Lantern" and it seems pretty awesome. With this you can not only make ZX Spectrum text adventure games, but also Apple ][e and DOS.

I wonder if there are other text adventure authoring systems for the Atari 8-Bit line. Either way, what do you guys think of my discovery?

There were a couple commercial ones back in the day:

AdventureWriter

Adventure Master

As far as Interactive Fiction goes, I would guess the highest portability would be to write the game in Z-machine Interpreter language.

There are still annual awards for IF, the IFDB lists several tools (Inform 6 / 7) that help you write IF that can be compiled  Z-machine code.

Thanks.

On a semi-related topic, there is also MPAGD, which is only similar in that it's both a game engine and a cross-compiler.

Thanks for the tip. I probably should learn one of the Informs eventually.

Yes, this is a very cool system...   I have met Evan Wright, IRL, at CoCoFEST!, ( https://www.glensideccc.com/ ), which meets IRL, once a year near Chicago, IL..

Evan has an Envious Job of Teaching with Classic Game Programming as a part of it..

If you are interested in text adventure systems, there's also my minimalist (ie: "reinvent the wheel") system for the game I'm making for the Oric computers (also 6502 based).

I wrote some dev-log post about it with a couple details about how that works: https://defenceforce.itch.io/encounter/devlog/746133/why-building-another-adventure-engine
