I think the Trooper buttons are the same input, and having the two buttons is more for either right or left handed play style.

Myself, I got a 'Hyperkin Sega Genesis Controller' from Amazon (it was fairly cheap actually) along with a '7800 Mega Controller Adapter' I got from the Atari Age store.

Together it works well with 7800 and 2600 games and it was a less expensive option compared to something like the Retro Game Boys 7800 game-pads (which after currency conversion along with the shipping costs would be the expensive option for me).

Until Atari releases their upcoming CX78+, some excellent 3rd party options:

RetroGameBoyz Atari 7800 Controller (NES-style D-pad)

Bratwurst Atari 7800 Joystick (arcade-style)

RetroHQ Mega 7800 Controller Adapter + 8BitDo M30 2.4G Controller (wireless Genesis-style 6-button D-pad)

What are some available 2-button controllers that will work with 2-button Atari 7800 games on the 2600+ ?

Does the Hyperkin "Trooper" work as a two button controller or are both buttons just the same fire button?

The Hyperkin Trooper definitely does not work as a 2 button, 7800 style controller but works fine for the 7800 games that only use one button.
