I feel that Xanthiom is an original game that just happens to have similarities with Etriodmay. It really feels like it's going for its own thing, so it's hard to compare to the otherwise very faithful ports.

Myst is amazing, but I feel I need to go back to the original to see what everything is, haha.

Ports can sometimes be subjective but Xanthiom has so much in common with Metroid. It has some of the same enemies with the same enemy movement patterns, same look to the main character, same door you have to shoot through to get to the next area plus many more. If you sat someone down to play it and you didn't tell them what game it was they would immediately think Metroid.

I know it is a hard task, for ZPH, for people that are nominating, and I know it’s now done and dusted for this year’s categories. Just sharing my opinion, maybe this will help in the future editions, maybe it won’t, most likely won’t.

Believe me, there are endless debates about Port vs Original and where the line is, the opinion of the developer factors in as well. It occupies a lot of my time during the AHAs.

don’t get me wrong, I know it looks like I am nitpicking, but there is an original game in 2600 category that immediately feels even more like a port of something else.

Penult?  From the developer:

Penult?  From the developer:

a) James was defining Xianthom by a player „immediately thinking metroid”, so I defined Penult by a player immediately thinking Ultima

b) Xianthom’s developer does describe a game as:

Play the original Xanthiom as it would have been if released in 1981 for the Atari 2600! Play as Lieutenant Grisham on his first mission on Planet Coati 5!

Requires an Atari 2600 emulator to play.

does not say Metroid port either. Even if it „started as Metroid” clearly didn’t end up as Metroid. It’s metroidvania, for sure, but there is A TON of metroidvanias, for every platform imaginable.

Oh, ok.  I didn't realize that was the argument you were trying to make.  Thank you for clarifying.

For the record, James also thought that Penult should be categorized as a port, but I didn't feel it should, so since it was an edge case, he took my preferences into account. Also, Penult had been in the "original" category when it was nominated for best WIP, so that may have been a factor as well.

There are two, in fact. The other one is even more direct. The source material for that one was not a VIDEO game, though.

I don't think it ultimately matters much - they're all great games! I just think it's funny.

Turbo Arcade final CG NTSC still crashes on the latest Stella, freshly downloaded.

Stella doesn't auto detect the correct cartridge type for Turbo Arcade. (It chooses 3F.) If you manually change the cartridge type to CDF in Options>Game Properties after you see the error, Stella will launch it correctly.
