My Modest PS2/PS1 CIB Collection Along With Some Switch Games and a Couple PSP Titles. How's my space management?

Recommended Posts

Some stuff I've collected over the last 8 months or so. As a college student, I'm learning how to make the most out of limited space and money. It's definitely become a problem, however. This is basically all of my shelf space. I originally had some boxed Mega Drive games on display, but I had to put them into storage.

All in all, I'm happy with what I have so far. Any recommendations for any of the platforms depicted? I'll update this thread with closer photos as time goes on. Every game here has a story to it, as my goal of game collecting is to make sure that every game in my collection serves some kind of purpose.

My PS1/PS2 games. I had to stick some of them in the back as I was running out of games. I'm pretty happy with the layout, although the controller cables get pretty annoying..

Oh yeah, and that white PS2 game covered by the cable is Gran Turismo 4. The two PS1 games covered by the cable are Aquanaut's Holiday and Rainbow Six.

Ridge Racer is currently my only longbox PS1 game.. they take up a lot of space.

Ah, here's some of my favorite RPGs and PSP games. The console depicted is an SCPH-5501 PlayStation. Hmm, that reminds me, I still need to replace that laser for it...

And of course, next to it are some of my favorite RPGs. Chrono Cross is actually sealed, as it's part of the 2019 Square Enix reprint.

The PSP games are Lord of Arcana (sealed), Ace Combat X and Ace Combat X2. That DS game is my most prized game for that console... the almighty Chrono Trigger.

Here's what it looks like on top. I apologize for the awful glare.

The system depicted is, of course, an SCPH-39001 PS2 — arguably the most reliable of all the PS2 revisions. I got those memory card holders 3D printed on eBay. It's actually one of my favorite purchases in my entire collection... I think they look really nice.

My video solution is a RetroTink 2X Scart — it's perfect for displaying some excellent quality RGB video on my flat panel television.

Neat collection! As someone who’d always had ample space for shit I always have an appreciation for compact setups like this, although I think it may be time for you to get a better camera ;)

Although I’m not really that much of a PS type of guy it does look like you have a lot of the stuff that I’d want to play. Perhaps you could check out the Burnout series though, if you haven’t already? Revenge is pretty fun.

And since you’re so short on space I might recommend acquiring a backwards-compatible PS3. They’re pretty expensive and I do get the appeal of owning the original systems (as one who owns both myself) but the PS3 is HDMI capable and runs both PS1 and 2 games super well, and of course it’ll expand your library to the PS3 generation. My CECHE PS3 (80gb model with emulated emotion engine; imo the best compromise between PS2 compatibility and reliability) has been my go-to console for all my PlayStation games ever since I got it, and it’ll of course play SACDs and Blu-Rays too, if you happen to be one of the, like, 8 people who actually use them.

I'll definitely consider doing the backcompat PS3 route at some point in the future. Although, I'd absolutely need to do preemptive maintenance to ensure it lasts for awhile. I know the GPU in particular was a common point of failure on early models...

In any event, I appreciate the Burnout recommendations. I'll definitely be looking into those games.

Went to my local retro store last Saturday, these were my pickups. That puts me at 5 physical PSP games, CIB.

I try to collect CIB if possible, but that's admittedly not always realistic.

That's the way to do it!

Nice setup!  Very cozy.

The PS1 emulation on the PS3 is solid, but not ideal.  It adds 40ms of input lag and does not scale the image up very cleanly, even if you turn the filter off.  I think your current setup, with actual consoles over SCART to the Retrotink is definitely the way to go.

If you want to save some space, I'd just put the PS1 in storage.  The PS2 plays PS1 games just fine as you know, with no added lag and a perfectly clear picture!

@newtmonkey Thanks! I'll definitely consider putting the PS1 in storage in the future. Like you mentioned it is nonessential for playing PS1 games, especially when using a fat PS2.

Honestly, the only real reasons why I have it out are cause I enjoy displaying it, and so I can play burned PS1 backups. It's not a very honorable reason, I know. It's just one of the ways I'm saving money until I can afford all the games I want.
