Cobra Kai
The appeal of the system to me is that it has 2 of my top 5 games of all time on it. So, for that reason alone, I'll always own the Jaguar to play Tempest 2000 and Defender 2000. Just on a philosophical level, I've always had the gamers rule that if a console has just one game on it that is exclusive and amazingly fun, then it's probably worth owning the system. It's why I own and continue to play my Jaguar today, but not the 3DO. The 3DO has some awesome games that I would love to have like Need For Speed, Return Fire, and Road Rash, but all of those games are on the PSX, so I probably will never invest in it. There's other things that keep me enamored with the Jaguar, and none of my reasons are unique. The fact that it's the ultimate underdog console is certainly a draw. Part of me is going to be a fanboy for the Atari Jaguar because F@#% You, that's why. It's never been as bad as all the experts always said it was, and I think as time goes on, it just becomes more apparent that the 64-bit marketing is less and less important, in fact it's completely meaningless, and the game library itself has shown to have quite a few very fun titles in there worth owning. That's all that matters isn't it? Also, I've had it since launch in 1994. It's the only console I've ever bought on launch day. So, that kind of history, it sticks with you. It's basically a member of the family at that point. This Jaguar and me are going all the way, a whole life. For what it's worth, Need For Speed is very different on 3DO. Graphics are way better, but there is no 2-player mode and some additional music made it to the PSX version. heytbone
For me the Jaguar has a really solid selection of 2D games, some nice shooters, and mech sims, a mix of great arcade games and a nice homebrew scene. Personally, this is one of the eras of gaming that I like the most since it's kind of the best of what 2D games can offer (See Rayman, Another World, Jumping at Shadows, Super Burnout, Worms, etc.) while still being a home console. Consoles like the Saturn are kind of a decent alternative, but I think that appeals to people who are into niche Japanese games. On the other hand, the Jaguar is definitely a niche Euro gaming system predominantly. Because of this the flavor of the games is less over the top, flashy, etc. and something kind of unique that didn't really catch on in the US as Japanese games did. 3

Otherwise both look the same to me.

As was said NFS is different and unique on the 3DO. Also Road Rash on the 3DO is the definitive version for me. I had it on the Saturn for years and finally picked up the 3DO version later. The 3DO version has more content. It's sad and obvious playing both they really kinda rushed the Saturn version in comparison.

Because it takes longer to render 1 frame, you got way more content. Definitive.😉😅 Edit: ups, its NFS lol Edited October 13 by agradeneu
XR4Tim
Unless I'm playing with friends, I always prefer the 3DO version of NFS. The cars look way better to me. Particularly the Porsche 993 and Toyota Supra. On the Playstation version, the rear fenders on the 993 look very angular rather than curved, and the Supra looks skinnier and taller than it should. The Corvette ZR1 doesn't look particularly good in either version (I could have sworn it was a Tesla Cybertruck on the PS1 chase camera), but it is a little better on the 3DO. The framerate is for sure better on the PS1 version, but it doesn't add much to the playability for me. The 2-player mode and (excellent) in-game music made the PS1 version worth having. They did have about a year and a half of additional development before the PS1 version was released. I wonder if they could have done the same on the 3DO with that extra time. I know we're way off topic

They are very different. 3DO version is simulation based and is an evolution of the original Test Drive games (same dev studio). Cars are heavy, acceleration is slow, turns are difficult, and higher difficulties make it easy to spin out or blow an engine. Comparatively that stuff barely exists in the PS1 version, where it was turned into a fast arcade racer with vastly different handling and feel. You get up to speed quickly, zip around turns and the handling is much faster. Not to mention the main mode has you racing laps against other vehicles, whereas the 3DO one has you solely driving “Point A to B” like a Test Drive title. Several other changes are there to differentiate the two, but the biggest is that the 3DO original tries to make it feel like you are driving a real car on a highway (as the Test Drive games did). Both are worth playing but as a fan of classic Test Drive, I always give the edge to the 3DO one. It’s got a very unique feel. PS1 version is fine, but later NFS titles (even on PS1) did the faster arcadey gameplay better. Edited October 14 by Austin
Cobra Kai
That's very good info Austin. I have played NFS on 3DO and remember it fondly. I have actually not played it's PS1 port, and assumed it was the same because of my experience playing the other games on both consoles, which were Road Rash and Return Fire, both of which were dead ringers in my memory. Austin
Yeah, it's a reason the "well it's available on other platforms" line of thought (as a reason to avoid 3DO) backfires with certain titles. Space Hulk is another with significant differences on 3DO, likewise with Starfighter. But you wouldn't know it just by looking at the covers. mqark
I should like it - obviously being more than a little bit interested in it's forerunner, however I personally don't find any of the titles interesting or appealing to play. With a greater library of software there may have been more for me. I guess I was a bit disappointed by it as I was so excited for the Multisystem, but that's entirely my own issue that I need to get over, I don't think many other people approached the Jag expecting a Konix 2 and hoping for bigger and better things than were delivered. Horses for Courses - and this particular console just didn't really do it for me. I have one with a Gamedrive, but it never gets used (Having said that - I have many machines, and no time to use any of them!).
