What Atari 2600/7800 game have you been playing the most today?

Recommended Posts

We have been playing Ms Pac-Man (2600), Ninja Golf and Asteroids (2600) this evening. We being myself and my three year old daughter. Gotta get that Atari education!

She is still working on mastering a joystick and joypad, not quite there yet, but I'm switching between both to see if one sticks. Holding the base of the joystick firm enough to move the stick is very challenging for her. However the lack of skill did not stop her really enjoying some Ms Pac-Man, the ghosts and colours and sounds, also the cherries, she seemed to like a lot about this game.

She only spends a very short time playing any game as I guess the frustration of not being able to use the input device properly makes it get old quickly. Regardless, she played Ms Pac-Man game for maybe ten minutes.

She then tried Ninja Golf, I really didn't think this would stick, but she played this for longer, and seemed to have a riot getting her ass kicked. She loved that she could run and constantly jump to avoid most baddies and the dragon on the green and title screen really seemed to capture her imagination.

Asteroids was the last game and the least well received, I assume the graphics being less interesting to her, fine control of spinning the ship round and not thrusting was way out of her skillet, there was also much hyperspacing too. 🤣

I've tried a number of games now, I really need to find ome that it super easy and gentle on the consequences of slow and inaccurate controls, difficult!

Not played it in several days, so a session of solid favorites today.  DK (7800), Ms Pac-Man (2600), Q*bert, BurgerTime, Pressure Cooker, and Star Wars - The Arcade Game.  No new high scores, but several respectable ones.

I use to play Maze Craze, Freeway, Flag Capture, Keystone Kapers and Grand Prix with my daughter when she was a child. She always used a SEGA Master System Controller it worked well for her. She also had trouble with other controllers. Maze Craze has so many variations, one variant we would play was capture. The object was to capture 3 robbers roaming the maze before you could exit the maze. Another was Blockade if you press the fire button you drop a blockade behind you which appears to be a dead end. Your opponent might think it’s a dead end and change direction but could easily pass through if aware. We even recently revisited these games when we had time to get together since I’ve had the 2600+. Good Times!

Thanks so much for these suggestions.

She has played a lot of Freeway, definitely her favourite so far.

We will have to try Maze Craze and Grand Prix, she will be able to play those to a degree. I think she will enjoy the graphics in Keystone Kapers.

I have an old Mega Drive (as we call it) three button pad so let's see if she can learn on that. Thanks.

I think for now she's just slightly in awe of being able to control(kinda 🤣) the things she sees on the TV, and that is giving her great joy. 😊

That's so nice that you could revisit those games again. 😊

The Atari Flashback joystick is much looser than an original so may be easier to use?

Maybe she would also like game mode 14 on Surround (included in the 10 in 1 cart) because it lets you just draw on the screen. 😊

I've been playing a lot of the homebrew games by Champ Games, such as Elevator Agent, Wizard of Wor Arcade, Tutankham Arcade, and Turbo Arcade.

(I wish there were a way to install Stella on a USB drive.)

This made me laugh... but everyone plays the wrong mode, the slower mode is actually quite playable. Maybe it's one for the RTFM topic.  😁

If my memory is correct I think that shitter had like 17 variations? I'm not going to take the time to learn them but what the hell could they all be?!

Todays game, Deepstone Catacomb.

I don't have it so I can't join in on the fun. I watched a YT video about it and it does look cool.

Frogger. I forgot how tough this game can get. Plus the 2600 version kinda sucks with the sprites going invisible.

Is your Frogger a PAL version? I keep seeing posts about sprites disappearing. I haven’t noticed on mine. My Frogger is NTSC.

Same here.  Mine is NTSC and works fine.

I dunno, but I have two froggers, one with a better label and both do the same things. The cars and trucks can disappear but can still kill you.

Do you know what level it happens on? I’ll have to try mine again but I’m almost positive I Don’t experience this issue.
