Very nice review.  Thanks for sharing it.

I too have fond memories of the C=64 version, which I played for days on end, and it remains one of my favourite games of all time.  The Intellivision Ultimate Edition improves on the original in significant ways.

I don't remember. and I didn't check - do you remember in the C64 version if you always had to earn more money than you started with?

I kind of think it was that way.  As I remember (and it has been several decades, since I last played, so I could be wrong), at the end of the game, you would get an account number if you paid back your initial loan and earned a profit.  If you didn't, you would get a message about going bankrupt or something.

I sort of recall that the point of the game was that you were starting a franchise and received a $10,000.00 loan from the bank to start, and you need to pay it back and succeed as a business.

I played the C64 version on the Retropie recently and yes you had to earn more what you started on the C64 to get a new account number.

I wrote up a little review in the "Games Beaten" thread:

From your review:

"I appreciated that it ended up actually being kind of hard to catch the ghosts in this version.  Even with multiple strategies, I still miss a few here and there which adds to the replayability and challenge of what was such an impressive gaming sequence when the title released on the C64 all those years ago. "

It looks like the "adaptive difficulty" feature (not included on the C64 original) is working as intended 🙂

The game should feel challenging to players of all skill levels... but not too much.

PS.: for those who miss having more than one skill setting... simply try playing without buying the ghost bait. Buy a trap instead. That should keep you busy 🙂

  • 3 months later...

I received an email asking me to pay for the upgrade and later a notice that my CIB package had shipped. They're still working through the list of people who confirmed they wanted a CIB copy, though. I'm sure it won't be much longer before they're all in people's hands.

OH!

Was this recently?  I had asked to be upgraded, but I have not received an email to pay.

Yes. The package just went out Friday. If memory serves, they're working through the list in the order people made their initial payments.

As usual I was one of the last people to pay so I am probably pretty far back depending on how many orders there were beyond the 100 needed.  Eager to get it even though I have the ROM.  But still grinding my way through Dragon Quest while I wait.

Did you get any sort of confirmation that you made the original request? Way back when I sent an email asking for the upgrade but never heard anything after that.

Nope, the payment request was the first I heard from them since they announced there would be a CIB many months ago which is what they said they would do on that notice on March 29th I think.  So basically 4 and a half months ago.
