Very cool! I find that I do better on BurgerTime with a disc than a dpad - excited to see this!

That's amazing because I've been kicking ass with BurgerTime with the Nintellivision a hell of a lot better than I ever did with the disc.

Currently working on a virtual disc overlay.  This overlay will be built-in for all games and toggled in/out with a button press (default is START... just as SELECT is the Main Menu).

This should allow games that make better use of a full 16-digital contact disc like Bowling or PGA Golf.  The vast majority of games won't need this... but it will bring benefit to those that could use the extra precision.

Now I just need to re-learn some basic Geometry to break up the hit-regions into 16 slices/wedges. My current touch-screen hit detection is based on simple-to-compute rectangles.

I guess the only thing left for you to figure out is how you can hook up two DSi XL together to be able to play two player games, like sea battle against somebody else. 😁

Oh my here we go!

Yeah, the DS has multi-player local and wi-fi but only for games that are programmed to take advantage of it.  Nintellivision isn't structured that way and a conversion would be difficult. But the code is available should someone be keen enough to try.

Hey all - Thinking of getting a DSi XL for this.  How are you all finding the screen size, particularly folks in their 50s like me?  🙂

So used to my Switch OLED and the 7" screen vs. the XL's 4.2.

The screen size is small but it's fine for gameplay - I'm in my 50s and use basic non-prescription reading glasses for it just like I do for a computer.

I'm 55 and I wear glasses when I go to baseball games and when I'm bowling but not when I'm playing on the DSi XL and there's nothing wrong with the screen as far as being able to see it

I present my screen caps and my videos in this and my GORF thread as evidence.

My strongest recommendation for all seven of my emulators (including Nintellivision) is a DSi XL - the larger screen is easier for my mid-50s eyes, the 4:3 screen ratio is perfect for vintage gaming and the XL has a slightly slower LCD fade which more closely mimics the pixel fade of phosphor TVs.  I don't have any modern handhelds but I can say that a DSi (XL or otherwise) is a solid machine with excellent engineering.

Plus it's cool to be playing 40 year old games on a 20 year old handheld :)

I second this - I forgot to mention I'm using a DSi XL and it's a great machine.

This is now my favorite way to play.

What an incredible programming piece you have created.

Thought I'd post a few more screen shots of Nintellivision.
This program really breathes new life into playing Intellivision games.

What are the seven emulators you use on the XL?  Can you put all 7 on the same device/SD card?

Yes Beach Head is from IntellivisionCollector.com. It's a very good port that does a great job bringing the C64 experience to the Intellivision. Plus, the cavern level is even better with the disc controller on original hardware. Someday there may even be a virtual disc for the Nintellivision...if that happens Beach Head will be a great fit.

They are all here: https://github.com/wavemotion-dave

  • StellaDS (Atari 2600)
  • A5200DS
  • A7800DS
  • A800DS
  • Nintellivision (Intellivision and ECS with and without JLP support)
  • DS994a (TI99/4a)
  • ColecoDS (which itself emulates the Colevovision, ADAM, MSX1, Tatung Einstein, Sega SG-1000, Memotech MTX, Hanimex Pencil II, Sord M5, Spectravision and Creativision)

And yes, all of my emulators (plus others written by awesome folks) will work off the same SD card.

Any recommendations on an SD card?

I tend to use SanDisk cards formatted with the official SD Formatter (this is important - you must ensure the card is formatted with standard 32K sectors... if you just format with Windows or Linux default formatters, you might not get that and you will run into problems with the card eventually).

I slightly prefer full-sized SD cards (not ones with an adapter) since for some reason all the adapters I've used seem to have lock switches that feel a little loose and sometimes inserting it into my DSi the lock switch will toggle and thing won't work right.

I bought some of these from eBay and they work great for me... industrial strength so I can remove and insert it like a thousand times as I continue to develop my emulators :)

But, honestly, any basic SD card from 1GB up to 16GB should work fine (I've not tried those really massive capacity SD cards so don't know if they would work).  Even a 4GB card would hold my emulators and about 10,000 classic games.
