JagWarlord
What are your thoughts on this system? I thought this was only released in the UK but, why are there NTCS versions? I wish I could find an Amiga site with some damn pics of the games so I can see what the grafix look like
Ze_ro
Yeah, it was definitely released in North America... but Commodore was never very successful outside of Europe (with the exception of the C64 of course). Since the CD32 is essentially a repackaged Amiga 1200, the games should look pretty much identical. I have lots of respect for the Amiga line though, and they're all quality machines. It's too bad they never caught on. --Zero
RCmodeler
Commodore never had a chance against the Wintel behemoth. Even Apple almost declared bankruptcy (until Bill Gates "generously" gave them money).

Sometimes the graphics and audio were enhanced slightly (256 colors and CD quality sound), but sometimes they are the exact same game. Keir
There are a number of expansion units that will turn a CD32 into an Amiga 1200: SX-1 (Paravision) SX32 (DNE) CD32 Promodule (Elsat) and one I don't know much about, the CD32fSWI Expansion by Index which comes with a built in 3.5" drive. It lets you play Amiga 1200 disk games on your CD32, but I guess it doesn't have ports for any kind of Amiga peripherals like the others. There may be more I don't know about. CD32 Source is a good website to check out.
JagWarlord
Why are reviews so harsh on Total Carnage for Amiga cd32? Is it really THAT bad? Alien Breed looks sweet though

2600Lives
Well, at OKGE, Brian Green from the Particles website (and he's a cool guy, too!) had one, so these arthritic hands got a chance to play it in person! Woo hoo! It was pretty cool I must say. The controllers were FUNKY, but you got used to them pretty quickly.
Ze_ro
Can't the Amiga cd32 system be modded into a full-blown amiga 1200 system There are official add-on modules that will do just that... but they're really hard to find, and you'll pay a pretty penny for them. Doing things the other way might be easier... buy an Amiga 1200 and all the bits necessary to play CD32 games on that (I'm pretty sure this is possible). I think in the process, you'll also make the 1200 able to play CDTV software as well (In fact, I may be wrong, but I think the CD32 can do CDTV stuff on it's own). Alien Breed is an excellent game by the way. It's like Alien vs. Predator (Jaguar version) from an overhead perspective. --Zero

Woo hoo! It was pretty cool I must say. The controllers were FUNKY, but you got used to them pretty quickly. You can www.liksang.com also sells a compatible controller for about $6 which I'm thinking of picking up. I've got to thank Keir on here for selling/trading me his spare I've been wanting one of these since 1993. As for the SX1/SX32 expansions, they're not hard to get them at all. Eyetech (www.eyetech.co.uk) still sells them. The thing is, they're fairly pricey. Converting an A1200 to a CD32 isn't much better. The CD32 does have an extra custom chip in it (Akkira?) and finding a PCMCIA CDROM drive for the 1200 that will emulate the CD32's timing isn't fun either. People are making compilation CDs for the CD32 that has tons of original Amiga games modified for it so it's just a matter of dropping it in your CD32 and go. Really, that's the way to go if you want to play a lot of old Amiga games - find a place to download the compilation CDs and go.
Spirantho
For anyone who has not used a CD32 before, I have one word for you: Jetstrike. Those who do have a CD32 and have played this game will know where I'm coming from.. definitely one of my favourite games ever, specially with that soundtrack.... BTW, CD32 emulation is black art... best bet is to get a CD32 and expand it - or just get a cheap 1200, of course... there are some excellent games for it, though.. if only it had more RAM for save games... Ze_ro
BTW, CD32 emulation is black art... Are you talking about emulating the CD32 on an Amiga 1200, or emulating the CD32 via UAE? I've never tried it before, but UAE can play these games, right? --Zero
marcfrick2112
Hello all, Just a few comments about your comments on the CD32. First, 'modding' a A1200 into a CD32 wouldn't work 100%. The CD32 used a proprietary interface for the CD drive (Not IDE or SCSI) Sure, you could just add a regular CD-ROM to your 1200, but you would not have an Akiko chip (full-motion, but not full-screen graphics and C2P chip). In my experience, MOST CD32 games don't run on an A1200. Exeptions are Dark Seed, James Pond 3 (with a WHDLoad install) and Exile, which was designed to work on both. Something like Microcosm that uses lots of full-motion video falls flat. Most of the CD32 'emulators' for Amigas do Nothing... If you need controllers just go to Software Hut (www.softhut.com) Lik-Sang will charge you $20.00 for shipping or more....finally there just are not many great games for the system, and I am a big fan. Anyway, me, Amiga owner since 1989: 2 A1200's, CD32, A4000, 1 A500 in bad shape
Keir
In fact, I may be wrong, but I think the CD32 can do CDTV stuff on it's own. That depends on the game. Some CDTV games will work fine, some won't work at all and others will work but with problems. The article "CDTV Retrospective" lists the CD32 compatibility of every CDTV game: http://www.ifrance.com/ninjaw/cd32/_Docs/D...trospective.htm
mos6507
The funny thing about the CD^32 is that in a lot of ways it mirrors what Atari did with the XEGS. The Amiga's lifecycle isn't that different from the Atari 8-bit, actually. Both platforms were conceived as expandable game machines, but were transitioned into home computers, and both ended their lifecycles being turned into game consoles after all. Flojomojo
Exhuming an ancient thread, since this doesn't get discussed much: So if I've already got a Sega CD, a 3DO, and the Bochs DOS emulator, do I really want to get one of these systems? There's a nice looking machine for $100 shipped on Ebay. I have access to the whole software catalog. Is it worth my money? Perhaps more importantly, is it worth my time? It's like Alien vs. Predator (Jaguar version) from an overhead perspective. --Zero 427940[/snapback] Actually it is not so easy to play cd32 games on an Amiga 1200 with a cd drive, the cd32 had custom hardware and you prob have more luck running cd32 software on a pc with an emulator then a A1200 w/cdrom. Alien Breed was a great game and yes the opriginal 3 (I, special edition, and II) were basically really slick (and fun) Guantlet knockoffs but the 3rd version which he is prob talking about is called Alien Breed 3d and it was a FPS shooter for the Amiga, similar to Doom. One thing to consider is almost all the cd32 games were available as AGA disk games, so minus some FMV and maybe a soundtrack or level you can pretty much play all the same games (and much more of course) with a A1200, if you dont mind using floppies or HD Installers. jesusc
I've owned a couple of these over the years. Overall, I'd say pass on it, unless you want to have an obscure machine to show off. For being "32 Bit", the games are mostly 16 bit quality in terms of graphics and sound. I found the controllers, while looking cool (to me anyway) were very uncomfortable and not especially responsive. Some of my favs were simon the sorcerer and just about all the team 17 developed games. Never played jetstrike though. Hmmm....

SteveW
That's one reason I'd like to get an Amiga CD32 - the cool looking controllers. I've never had the chance to use them, so I don't know how comfortable they are, but they really look great.
Feralstorm
The controllers ain't bad overall, though I replaced mine with a couple Competition Pros (looks much like Genesis controllers) I have a CD32 with an MPEG expansion cart. There are quite a few nice games available for it, but relatively few that can't be found in an Amiga/Amiga 1200 version. A lot of CD32 titles were "Semi-shovelware" with an FMV intro or perhaps a CD music track being the only real difference between versions. If you do get a CD32, I would strongly recommend getting a TV/monitor which can do both PAL and NTSC scan rates. A large portion of games are PAL-only (and the machine itself happily switches scanrates to whatever the software tells it.) A few favorites of mine (though I haven't played them in a while) The Chaos Engine Zool 2 Worms Pierre Le Chef is Out to Lunch Gloom Super Stardust Edited May 3, 2005 by Feralstorm
Flojomojo
Thanks for the opinions. Since I've already got a lot of CD stuff from that era, it sounds like an Amiga emulator would be cheaper, more reliable, and take up less physical and HD/CD space since most of the games are already on disk. It's a rare, happy day when someone talks me out of a silly retro computer purchase.
Tempest
Not to hijack this thread, but I just got two Amiga 2000 units as part of a Lynx Developers system. Aside from the Lynx development, can you do anything interesting with an Amiga 2000? I'm not sure how powerful they are. Tempest
