Welcome!

Scramble! Often credited as the first recognisable shmup (although from long before that word needed to exist) and the Vectrex got a solid port. The game is very tough, but also very short so which makes it easy to learn.

Availability

As this was an official release, Scramble is freely available to download from many places, it's included in all multicarts, and the original release sold well so there are plenty of original cartrigdes out there too.

Scramble is of course available on Dr Snuggles emulator too:

Figuring this one out, my controller seems to want me to fly up sometimes when I’m pushing to the right 😆

54 410

A digital joystick might help here... something that has corners like an 8-way arcade stick.  I like to use my Vectorcade controller for Scramble.

Is it me or is the collision detection a little less forgiving when flying through the maze on the 2nd run compared to the first run?

The hit box doesn't seem consistent to me either. Not sure if that's on purpose, a bug, or a result of the finicky screen

Until now I haven't experienced problems tegarding collision dtetectipn but I haven't played much and haven't made it far, yet. From what I experienced, if your shots pass an obstacle your ship will also pass savely. But in the maze there's little to no time to check this.

The collision detection in this game is brutal. Even the first run of the maze is a complete PITA. I do want to have a go with a d-pad or digital joystick to see if it makes life a little easier.

Yeah, that doesn't seem to be happening for me on the 2nd maze. On the first run the top and bottom part of the ship  can glide through the wall unhindered, but on the 2nd run it's not happening. I was just wandering if it was designed that way or just one of those quirks the screen can have.  Whatever it is, I'm just going to have to get gud.

The way the screen freezes for the game end message is brilliant, I can feel everyone’s pain from dying in the maze 😁

My screenshot shows the fourth death of my last four lives, all at that same spot.

For me, collission detection in first level is fine. Perhaps a matter of differences in the adjustment/tolerances of the Vectrexes?

. o O (When playing the first 20 seconds of Scramble it really feels like playing the arcade. O.k. it looks very different but the Vector graphics are quite appealing, too).

A first score:

39,350 (Vectrex console with digital controller from Victor Marland)

4th level? I'm in level 2. I guess you could score much higher if you tried to shoot and bomb away as many stuff as possible.

No, my last four lives were all wasted at the exact same spot.  The photo is of the final life on the 2nd level maze.

I see. You're in 4th level of 2nd level maze / round - same here. Looks as if it's me who I should try to shoot and bomb more items to get a higher score. 😉 I also wonder how you manage to get past this corner of the maze but we'll find out...

Well done, Madwindoman! I hope that no anabolica, no stereoids, and no other drugs were used during playing. ;-)

Great score! But how the heck did you die right there? xD  My best is only like 80,500 from years past, but I died in a silly way just flying too low, ran out of shots, and crashed into a fuel station or something.

My hands were so sweaty by that point I could hardly hold the stick. I wanted 100k bad but alas it was not to be. I think I’m all scrambled out
