I recently came across this digital archive of Compute! magazine issues from the 80s.  It's a lot of fun flipping through them to read the articles, look at the ads, check out the reviews and even the type-in programs!

Link to the archive:

Here's an issue from October 1983 if you want to get an idea of what it's like:

I want to say this has been around for a while, but I am not sure about this particular resource.  I have my magazines from my subscription around 86/87, and they are fun to look through to see how far we have come, what ideas never made it off the ground or just failed, and what is still the same.

Plus, I have read articles from the period with directly contradict what some well-known people like to purport as history.

All good stuff.  Long live the Way Back Machine.

PS: I would love to mirror these collections via Torrent, but it looks like there are only Torrent links for the individual magazines in these collections.  Does anyone happen to know if the full collections of magazines have a single Torrent available?

Yep, it's definitely possible it's been around for a while.  I just happened to come across it recently (I don't even remember how) and I just found it so fascinating to flip through.  For whatever reason, looking at the various advertisements is my favorite part.  Seeing all the talk about CGA, VGA, Sound Blaster sound cards, the different game developers, etc., just brings me back.

That's a great idea.  I just did the same.  Thanks.

I absolutely loved Compute! magazine. I got it for two full years back when I was a kid... and it was the most fascinating magazine. It was like Omni and Popular Mechanics mixed with GamePro. I have my ~1992 subscription saved... and there's old Ultima Savage Empire ads inside there, along with some other awesome games. Man... I loved those magazines. Thanks for reminding me and sharing the links.

That's great!  Same here, I read every issue I had cover to cover, even all the details in the advertisements.  It brought back a ton of memories flipping through them online just now!

Awesome!  I'm not sure if you like arcades, but here's my favorite retro 80s arcade in Tampa Bay.  If you've never been, it's a lot of fun!

This is awesome!!! Thanks for telling me about this! I had no idea, I've been to a few of these... "museums" but it's always been on a vacation somewhere. I had no idea there was one like this here. Thank you! I'm going to check it out on Saturday and take the family.

Cool!  Yeah it's really fun, and not too crowded especially if you get there for opening.  I sometimes go on weekdays at 11am for an early lunch and I'm the only one in there!

If you guys get hungry, Tarpon Tavern around the corner is a nice little "pub", and across the street is an amazing Creole / Cajun place called H'ours Creole Smokehouse.

@82-T/A @TampaBay Either of you guys ever hit B-Sides?

I haven't!  Is it something interesting?  I saw a conference with that name on Google but not sure if that's what you're referring to.

It is a cybersecurity/hacking conference, usually held around Tampa and St. Pete.  Usually some good vendors, especially in Tampa, and lots of great classes and practical exercises.

Awesome.  Thanks.  That's the one I was just checking out online.  I just didn't want to read TOO much in case you were referring to something else.  It was a couple of weeks ago, but I'll make a note of it for the next time they have it.  Thanks again for the tip!

Dude... that is awesome, I didn't even know that was here. I used to work for a 3-letter for over a decade, and had no friggin' clue. I did used to go to Hack Miami all the time. You could tell the Feds because of their green GSA notebooks... lol.

Heck, yeah.  You should check it out next time it comes 'round.  I was unable to make it this year as I was tied up, but I and a buddy (former intel) usually make it out.  And, yeah, some of you guys stick out like sore thumbs :D  Not mad, I get along just fine with the alphabets when needed.

I definitely will. If you ever have the chance, definitely go to Hack Miami also. It's a much smaller get together... but there's always someone weird there. John McAfee went twice with his entourage, and they had a presentation from Mossad another year, and YTCracker comes regularly too. I don't think I ever stood out because I was originally from Miami, and I'd let my hair grow out a bit before I'd go anyway.

Man, I'd heard about BSides many times, and just never thought it was in Florida. That's awesome.

Well... I'm psyched... I'm definitely going to that arcade this weekend. And perfect timing too. My daughter just broke up with her boyfriend and she's devastated (which I don't get because SHE broke up with him). But it's been drama for an entire week, so I think we all need to hit the arcade. Hopefully they sell alcohol there too... hahah...

Ha, it's just an arcade, so there's no alcohol there, but it's in a little downtown with pubs, bars, and breweries right next door, so you're good.  Sorry to hear about your daughter, hopefully a little retro action will help, if even just a little!

They're still using them at DEF CON, or at least were as of last year :D

Heh.  That guy, very much with the emphasis on 'that'.

These days, they're a lot more concerned with them (in the generic sense) than us, which is nice.  That said (and my 'Government GTFO My Life' side is rather surprised that I'm saying this), they're generally OK if you're not on the receiving end.

I interact with CISA and FBI on occasion and as part of my new gig.  The people themselves tend to be on the same side of the conversation as we are, but the mere existence of these organizations leaves them rife for abuse.

Getting back to the original topic (had to scroll up to remember LOL,) it is largely my subscription to COMPUTE!, having the computers in my school, having computer-literate teachers, and then the TI-99/4A blow-out that put one in my home that put me where I am today.  My only lament is that I spent a lot of time generalizing rather than focused on specific paths or tasks, but even that has made me valuable in my own right.  (Frankly, had I been more focused on some of the things in which I was involved, I would likely not be in the good graces of the alphabet people.)
