It's summer time, surf's up, dudes and dudettes! Let's play the California Games Surfing event. This was one of my favorites on c64, so I'm looking forward to giving it some time on the Master System.

Instruction Manual here: https://www.smspower.org/seganotebook/califgam/manual/califgmm.html#surfing

For a bonus point, play any of the other California Games events (BMX, Hacky Sack, etc).

This round runs June 17 - June 30.

Dashopepper 8.2

Roland.         1.4

Quite the lack of documentation in the instruction manual or the internet on what to do.  Compared to the Lynx version it seems a lot more “grounded” where you do loops in the water and ride under the waves.  No vertical scrolling so if you do manage to get huge air you are completely lost off screen.  I managed to win the new surf board in the card flipping mini game. It’s super fast but thats not necessarily a good thing.

I’ll have to see what other version is closest to this to see if there is something I am missing.

Great score!

Practiced some… wiped out a lot. Read the manual… wiped out a little less, lol.

For the bonus, I played through an entire competition without reading the manual. I… did not do well :lolblue:

Here’s footage of me after playing in any event:

Superb animation. And the ice cream makes it even better. One of my favorite parts of the game :lolblue:

I just re-read this and realized that I have no idea what this mini-game is.  I was only "practicing" so maybe there is no mini-game for practicing?

Also, I found these tips for surfing.  Dunno if they would work for the SMS version:

How do you get a 10.0 in Surfing?

Quote from Roland:

  • Some tricks with/without turns in different angles (doesn't need to be all variations). I once got 10 points with only 11 jumps, of which were 6 times 45° with turn, 2 times 67° with turn, and each once 45° without turn, 90° with/without turn.
  • No spectacular jumps to the left (look nice, but are not necessary), or also the flat jump 23° with turn.
  • Jumps close to the crest are supposed to give more "points", but I have also received the 10.0 with only 3 of these jumps.
  • It is very important to surf some time in the wave/tube (20-40 seconds). For this just do a 360° turn (without jump) and move with fire up/down to get a bit slower.
  • The following is a jump that seems to be very important, especially for the guy with the moustache! A 90° jump, where you dunk back into the breaking wave. For this just speed up a lot until the crest is almost fully at the left border of the screen (it should still be visible a bit). Then pull upwards for the 90° jump, turn and in again. This way you should exactly hit the breaking wave.
  • Finally, when the siren sounds (time over), you should just surf horizontally in the lower area of the wave.
