Y adapter cable with selectable device # toggle switch for C64

Recommended Posts

For my C64, I have a 1541 and also an SD2IEC. I recently learned that a Y adapter serial cable, male to 2 female, that will accomodate both of the these serial devices simultaneously does exist. (Not for simultaneous use mind you, but just to be connected at the same time.) As I understand, you just plug the male end of the Y cable to the back of the C64 and the male ends of each device into the Y cable's female ends. But as @carlsson smartly pointed out, there could be device # issues when it comes time to calling on either device, as some programs on D64 software require the device # to be 8 within the program itself, that # typically being the 1541's domain, and those programs may not be able to be altered.

So this brings us to the question: sans the daisychaining concept, is there a ready made Y adapter with the above configuration that has a toggle switch already on it so you can set it to either device # 8 for the 1541 (if you are using physical floppies) or even as device #9 if you are instead using the SD2IEC set to device #8 for using that with a program on disk image?  Perhaps can this kind of a switch can be custom made, directly incorporated into the Y cable I am aware of now?  Hardwiring and/or soldering both not my forte, so I am looking for a plug-it-once-and-go concept here, if it's at all possible.

In short, it would just be dandy to have both devices hooked up at the same time to avoid potential inevitable damage from continual connector swapping of devices, while also having the ability to select and use either the 1541 or the SD2EIC as device #8 or #9. @brain , I believe I need to tap your brain on this one if I may... any ideas in this situation?    Thanks!

I used to make QuadPartIEC, which could turn off one or more of the 4 outputs, meaning you could have up to 4 chains, and 4 drive 8s.  There's been a bit of interest, so I made up a new design, just need to finish it.  Nagging me via email helps.

Oh, so that really isn't the same thing as the Y adapter cable with the toggle switch box exactly then?  (I wouldn't need the 4 chains and the 4 drive 8s, just a way to hook up only (1) 1541 and just (1) SD2IEC, which has its own serial port for my MPS 803 printer) Would you have or be able to build something more scaled down like that?
