I've tried that too, but seem to do better just playing though and get the high points when possible. Your method is definitely getting you some great scores. I'm almost certain I've directly shot the fairy that adds mushrooms and it didn't die. In the arcade game of Centipede it's represented as a flea and the instructions say it takes two shots to kill it.
