Getting Into 7800 - What Should I Buy?

Hey all, I'm looking for an atari 7800 console. Should I buy one off ebay around 150 with a couple games, or pay 180 for a composite/power modded one since I'm planning on getting composite on one anyway? Also, long shot but does anyone have a baby pac-man cart? I know I missed out on it in the store but figured I'd shoot my shot here too.

If you want to explore all the games you're probably better off with a GameDrive multicart. AFAIK you get modern video output thrown in. If you just want to play the most common games getting a system with a couple of games is probably the cheaper option.

I dare say that if you have a good quality CRT TV you might want to try to play through RF before getting a composite mod. For me that looks good enough on a B&O TV but my eyes might be ruined from looking at grainy CRTs through my teenage years.

I'm looking to set it up in the living room with my 65 inch, so AV is the way to go for sure. Also, does anyone by chance know of a wireless adapter for the 7800? May make things easier.

I got my 7800 with an AV mod from eBay.  I use it on my older smart TV that has an AV port.

Depends on which av mod the seller is doing, there are several from not much better than RF to quite ok.

Best bang for your buck would be a game drive so you can play the full library, pokey and FM sound and the best video quality

Unless you want to play a home brew game that you don't have digitally or just want to play a particular 2600 game that the 7800GD doesn't support?

Just asking- would the 2600+ work? That plays 7800 games, yah?

It does. And with the latest beta FW release it can play just about the entire library of stuff. But everything, but most of it from my testing and that of others.

Yeah, the uncertainty of my games not working combined with my love for original hardware makes it a pass for me

I can understand that. I was just trying to answer your question is all. And I worded it oddly. I just meant that everything I've tested has worked on mine. I think Rikki & Vikki might be the only game not working on it and that has more to do with the assets needed to get the music working than due to any physical limitation of the 2600+.

If you like vintage games and have collections already, I'd say look for a 7800 Lot for sale and then just buy all the retail games you ever though you wanted while its still cheap.  It seems every Atari system other than the 2600 is going up in price pretty regular.   If you really don't like it, you could surely get most of the $$$ back.

Also, what's the difference performance-wise between the game drive and the concerto? Looks like I can get a concerto for 70. I know the game drive has a video port but is there anything else I should know about?

EDIT: Looks like the concerto has less compatibility, nevermind.

The Game Drive will play any and all games from the get go, plus support for more sound chips. The concerto currently only plays games with upto 144K ROMs, and currently no support for anything other then POKEY audio as far as I know.
