Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration Expanded Edition

Recommended Posts

I found this article of a expanded edition of the Atari 50: The Anniversary Collection to be released in October.

https://web.archive.org/web/20240626110859/https://www.gameinformer.com/2024/06/25/atari-50-expansion-adds-over-30-games-and-new-timelines-this-october

Is this still in production?  What games will be featured?

  • Confused 1

That piece of news is just a little more than a month old. The thing will be released at the end of October. It's (early) August (in case you didn't notice).

Imagine if everyone created a new topic each time they had no news for a month about something to ask if it's still planned. 🙂

I've heard this is coming from multiple sources.  Not sure exactly how it will rollout.  Looks like the new content will be DLC.

Atari 50 Expanded Edition Announced, Adds 39 Games & New Timelines (msn.com)

Amazon.com: Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration – Expanded Edition - PlayStation 5 : Everything Else

Thanks Wongojack that is helpful information.

I found the thread on here (not originally found my Atariage search) for the Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration Expanded Edition:

I thought it was odd that he posted an internet archive link...

Well in his defense Game Informer just died...

I'm surprised the search didn't work, but I personally find risky to type such a complex chain of characters (including special characters) in a search box, especially since people don't always use the exact name of a game on a forum. I think if you had typed "Atari 50" for instance, it would have worked better (I wanted to try but the search won't work for some reason 🤨).

Yep, "he" or I only found the Game Informer mention of the expanded edition from my early search.  Found Game Informer posting their goodbye page so dug up the archive of that article.  With initially few mentions, and the one article not immediately accessable I wondered if the expanded edition might have been cancelled.

When I was at California Extreme last week, Jason from Atari was discussing this a little bit. It's definitely happening. He did mention a couple of the new games that it is adding, but they are easy guesses. Still, with 39 games, I'm certainly curious about some of the others.

Thirty-eight games. Frisky Tom was pulled from the compilation.

Oh?    I figure they will throw in something else to keep the advertised "39".

What other games do we know for sure will be part of this collection?   Any Jaguar titles?

They said now each section is comprised of 18 games. I doubt they try to add anything.

I doubt anything Jaguar related will be found in "The First Console War," but we might get Brain Dead 13 in "The Wider World of Atari." At one point I thought we would get Bubsy In: Fractured Furry Tails, but since I am now not sure Atari owns that one I am thinking not.

And maybe Atari bought Battlemorph back from Songbird Productions, but I doubt it.

Seems to be the devil is in the details.   Love how Atari is staying silent about Bubsy: FFT.

Battlemorph would be a great addition to play on a Playstation with the wireless controller. *. Braindead 13 and other CD games would also be a lot of fun.  Be cool if they could tap into running Missile Command with a VR setup as fans with BigPEmu recently did.

* there is the wireless controller for the Jag that also works with Battlemorph, though that sometimes goes to sleep.  :P

Why "on a PlayStation"? The Xbox and the Switch have wireless controllers as well, you know? 🤔

I have a Playstation so that is what I want to play it on.

I'd love it for switch. I've gotten lots of play out of the current Atari 50. Depending on cost I might even get it if its just dl content rather than a new game cart/disc/dl. I'm assuming its just additional content rather than a reprint, but I'd be all for a new one.

In promotional screenshots at various online retailers that have preorders up for the PS5 and Switch retail releases of the Expanded Edition (the only ones of the bunch that will get this physically), I've seen a screenshot of Berzerk (arcade), a screenshot of Atari Video Cube, spotted Red Baron's arcade cabinet in the game select menu, and I spotted Super Bug in the timeline section (which I don't believe was there before with them sticking pretty close to just games that were playable in Atari 50, which strongly hints that it will be one of the 39 new additions).

And obviously we know that we're getting several M-Network 2600 titles (likely a nearly identical list to what was in Atari Flashback Classics/Vault). And Berzerk for the 2600 seems like a real safe bet, otherwise the inclusion of arcade Berzerk wouldn't really fit the theme of the collection.

There's still lots of good possibilities to select from. Some that leap to mind include Food Fight for the 7800, maybe a few Intellivision counterparts to games that they're including in their M-Network form to flesh out their "first console wars" timeline, Centipede from Atarisoft for the Intellivision (could make for a good interview about how console manufacturers used to publish games on the competition), Battlezone (if they went to the trouble to emulate Red Baron which sadly doesn't get the respect that I feel it deserves, it has me crossing my fingers that Battlezone is making a return to Atari collections), etc.

They would have to get the license from Rebellion, though.

If I recall correctly, Atari did make an effort to license Battlezone from Rebellion for the original release of Atari 50, but couldn't come to an agreement in time for the release. Since they've invested the effort into producing this expansion, I hope that they were able to finalize that deal over the last two years.

If I was making the decisions at Atari, I would do my best to buy Battlezone back, but I would not license it. If they license Battlezone, that license will eventually run out, and if Atari wanted to rerelease Atari 50, say ten years down the road, they might have to remove some games because the license ran out. Just stick to the stuff you own.

I am conflicted on arcade Berzerk. When it was released, arcade Berzerk had nothing to do with Atari. The ports Atari made with the license are obvious choices for the inclusion, but I do not agree with the arcade game's inclusion.

The Atarisoft releases for other systems would make sense to me. They are definitely Atari games.

Shoot, if Atari could buy the Atari Games catalog from a now apparently interested to sale Warner Brothers, that would be a coup.

In the context of the time where Atari was licensing a lot of 3rd party arcade hits to adapt them to their home hardware and with Atari 50 presumably encompassing the home adaptations of Berzerk (and interviews from the Atari employees that were behind them), I feel like the arcade original very much has something to do with Atari and fits the theme of the collection.

Atari's history isn't just their in-house arcade games and their computer/console ports of said games and original titles for the home. They also were very heavily involved in licensing arcade titles for North American distribution for various companies like Namco that lacked that infrastructure at the time to do it themselves, licensing outside arcade games for home adaptations on Atari platforms, etc.

The presence of the source material for Atari's home adaptations of Berzerk seems like a fitting addition and the story that it helps tell with the interviews they're including from the Atari programmers behind the home ports seems like a fine excuse to toss it in. The other Stern IP though probably isn't a fit for the collection, although I'd look the other way if something like Frenzy popped up in here (maybe with the PacManPlus 7800 port as well, to give the arcade sequel to Berzerk at least a distant Atari connection).

Since Atari 50 is narrative-based, I'm sure they could figure out a way to justify the inclusion of Berzerk arcade.

If they do manage to acquire the properties from Warner, there's no way that happens in time for this DLC.    But imagine the killer arcade collection they could produce with the Atari Games + Williams + Midway + Stern + Atari SA's legacy arcade catalog, and give that the Atari 50 style treatment!

I just drooled on my keyboard...
Also, would that include Gauntlet, which I'm not sure who made the latest game of that, but there definitely needs to be more of them (I've thought of actually replaying through that with all of the characters  like I did Gauntlet: The Third Encounter on the Lynx.)

Edit:  Indeed, it was published by Warner Bros.
