Ok, just bought this (Super Pocket Edition Atari). Anyone else getting one?

Super Pocket Atari Edition – Atari®

Image2-DualShotcopy.jpg

It popped up in e-mail with a subject like... "You know you want one..." or something like that.

And before I knew it, I was typing in credit card numbers. DAMNIT...

Any idea how this is better than the Atari handheld that everyone was buying about 6-7 years ago (with the SD card slot)?

I'm tempted to, but I already own a Super Pocket, and I want to wait until I find out what games are going to be included with the new DLC for Atari 50.

As for how it compares, I don't own an Atari Flashback Portable, if that's what you're talking about, but the Super Pocket is unique in that it'll enable to you play Evercade cartridges.  The Evercade is a retro-gaming device / platform, and its games are usually compilation titles that include a slew of great stuff for around $20 - $30 each.  New Evercade carts are also released pretty regularly, and you can still purchase most of the older ones.  (Sadly, there are some carts that have been discontinued, and their prices have skyrocketed.)  You can find out more about everything that's been released on the main website.

Wait... you're telling me that the Super Pocket I just bought will play Evercade cartridges? I see in the picture in the back, there's a little panel that looks like it might be where carts go, but I assumed that was just for batteries. It said nothing about being able to play Evercade cartridges on the Atari website (unless I just totally missed it)... but if that's true, I'm super excited... there are a lot of cool Evercade carts.

EDIT: ... and yes, Flashback Portable... thank you! I have that also... love it. I used to take it on flights now and then, spent all my time playing Asteroids even though I had all the other games on there as well. Haha...

Yep!  The Flashback Portable has more games than the Atari Super Pocket, and later editions of that device have games from other publishers, but thanks to the Evercade support, the Super Pocket can play a wider variety of games from multiple systems.  Evercade also released several Atari-themed carts if you can still find them.  There's some overlap with what's included on the Super Pocket but the Lynx collections have games like Chip's Challenge, Dracula: The Undead, and several titles from Songbird Productions.  They're definitely worth looking into if you're a fan of those games and don't already own them.

Well the fact that the Super Pocket can play Evercade carts is a bonus.  I had the first model Atari FB portable with the SD card slot.  It was a nice handheld.  By the way, I pre-ordered the special edition Atari Super Pocket.  I'm looking forward to getting it.

To be honest, I'm done with these small pocket gaming devices. My eyes can't use these without readers (man that makes me sound old 🙄 ). Heck, I can even see my phone without readers. 😞

That is so awesome... makes it so much more worth it... and to think when I bought it, I'd only be playing ~50 games. Thank you!

Huge!!! Huge bonus... I still like my Flashback Portable too... just in a different way.

Dude... I get it, I totally do. I'm 46, and starting about 2 years ago, I can't see **** up close... I have to either wear readers, or put it off in the distance. It sucks!!!

I have a hobby where I restore mechanical watches, and I need to be able to see stuff up close and really small. I can't see anything now. It's really difficult.

I would have been all over the wood grain version, but the site didn't have a store (maybe they don't sell direct outside europe?) And no other site got them. I'm still tempted though, even though I've already got all the Atari releases for evercade (which this thing will play, in case you didn't know) just wonder what's different from the discontinued Atari carts? Be cool if some of the jag games made it.

No it doesn't but Funstock and Blaze are related, so buying from Funstock is basically buying from Blaze.

I didn't know that.  Thanks for the heads up!

Here's a list of the games that come with the Atari Super Pocket:

Arcade

Asteroids, Berzerk, Canyon Bomber, Crystal Castles, Frenzy, Liberator, Lost Tomb, Millipede, Missile Command, Night Driver, Pong, Skydiver, and Super Breakout

2600

Adventure, Aquaventure, Dark Cavern, Gravitar, Haunted House, Radar Lock, Save Mary!, Solaris, Street Racer, Submarine Commander, Tempest, Video Pinball, Wizard, and Yars' Revenge

5200

Bounty Bob Strikes Back!, Countermeasure, Final Legacy, Miner 2049'er, and Xari Arena

7800

Alien Brigade, Asteroids, Centipede, Dark Chambers, Desert Falcon, Fatal Run, Food Fight, Ninja Golf, and Motor Psycho

Lynx

Basketbrawl, Checkered Flag, Dirty Larry: Renegade Cop, Kung Food, Robo-Squash, Scrapyard Dog, Super Asteroids & Missile Command, Turbo Sub, and Warbirds

And here's a list of the games you can get by purchasing all of the Evercade cartridges:

Arcade

(Atari Arcade Collection 1)

Asteroids, Canyon Bomber, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Liberator, Lunar Lander, Millipede, Missile Command, Night Driver, Pong, Skydiver, Super Breakout, and Warlords

2600

(Atari Collection 1 and Atari Collection 2)

Adventure, Air-Sea Battle, Aquaventure, Asteroids, Bowling, Canyon Bomber, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Dark Chambers, Demons to Diamonds, Desert Falcon, Double Dunk, Gravitar, Haunted House, Human Cannonball, Millipede, Missile Command, Night Driver, RealSports Tennis, Solaris, Sprint Master, Steeplechase, Street Racer, Submarine Commander, Swordquest: Earthworld, Radar Lock, Tempest, Video Pinball, Wizard, Yars' Revenge, and Yars' Return

5200

(n/a)

None

7800

(Atari Collection 1 and Atari Collection 2)

Alien Brigade, Asteroids, Basketbrawl, Centipede, Desert Falcon, Food Fight, Motor Psycho, Ninja Golf, and Planet Smashers

Lynx

(Atari Lynx Collection 1 and Atari Lynx Collection 2)

Awesome Golf, Basketbrawl, Blue Lightning, California Games, Checkered Flag, Chip's Challenge, Crystal Mines II: Buried Treasure, Cybervirus, Dracula: The Undead, Electrocop, Gates of Zendocon, Gordo 106, Ishido: The Way of the Stones, Jimmy Connors' Tennis, Loopz, Malibu Bikini Volleyball, MegaPak Volume 1, Power Factor, Remnant: Planar Wars, Super Asteroids & Missile Command, Scrapyard Dog, Super Skweek, Todd's Adventures in Slime World, Xump, and Zarlor Mercenary

So to kind of sum up:

The Super Pocket includes 5200 games which are not featured on any Atari collection for the Evercade.  It also includes the 5200 version of Miner 2049'er which I think is a first for any Atari game compilation.  (Please correct me if I'm wrong!)

The arcade side of things is kind of a wash.  The Super Pocket includes Berzerk, Frenzy, and Lost Tomb but lacks Centipede, Lunar Lander, and Warlords.

For 2600 and 7800 games, the Evercade cartridges offer more overall.  In terms of exclusives, the Super Pocket has Save Mary! for the 2600, Dark Chambers for the 7800, and trades Planet Smashers for Fatal Run.

The Lynx cartridges are awesome, but the Super Pocket holds its own with several exclusives.

tl;dr

Buy an Atari Super Pocket if you have the money, don't own an Evercade device, and/or want to play some awesome Atari games.

Oh, I assume the Atari 50 units will be available on third party sites, like most other evercade stuff, its just the wood grain version sold out quickly, and I really don't have a need for "yet another evercade" still tempted, thing songbird and others have said their getting them, ill probably wait, but likely will get one, because Atari.

I didn't know Fun stock and blaze were separate sites, no wonder I couldn't find it. If I'd known back then, I'd have certainly preordered the wood one.

5200 Bounty Bob is included in Atari 50.

However, I cant seem to recall seeing 2600 Street Racer in any past compilation so thats a first.

Im also very very impressed with the 7800 offerings particularly Alien Brigade. I also believe thats a first time offering.

To each his own as they say, but the more I read about this, the happier I am that I pre ordered it. 95 percent of what’s being offered are winners for me.

My big question though- any inkling as to the shipping date?

I heard October ~ish, but don't hold me to that, I couldn't even tell you where I heard that.

There's a songbird person here, they should have a delivery estimate, and my experience with them is they get your order out fast, so probably a couple days after they receive them, maybe they can shed some light.

Atari’s website gives an October ship date. Given the experience people have been having ordering direct from Atari, though, I wouldn’t count on that.

Maybe, but the Atari 50 super pocket is made by blaze (evercade) which so far is pretty reliable about getting their stuff out.

Thought about getting one, but when I went to order, turns out I've already got the evercade expR with tombraider on preorder, so think ill wait on it.

I was in reference to Miner 2049'er.  The Atari 50 collection has the 2600 version and the 8-bit version but not the 5200 version.

Regarding Street Racer, it was included in Atari Flashback Classics Vol 2 for PS4 and Xbox One as well as in the Atari Flashback Classics compilation release for Nintendo Switch.

@Songbird ... yeah, Carl Forhan (sp?). Yeah, he's awesome... I used to get stuff from him ALL the time when I was committed to buying 1 of everything Jaguar. I've sold about 2/3rds of my stuff because it didn't make sense, but I kept the majority of the games I bought from him because they were so well done and had a lot of playability.

Was I wrong thinking bounty bob strikes back is miner 2049er? Idk if 5200 directly has miner2409er, but I think the 50 collection has an 800 version, is it sufficiently different from the 5200 version?

From my understanding, Bounty Bob Strikes Back! is the sequel to Miner 2049'er.  That said, I've never played either game extensively so I don't really know how much they differ.  Thankfully, the Super Pocket includes the 5200 versions of both games.

The Atari 50 collection has the 8-bit versions of both games but only Bounty Bob for the 5200.  That said, it does include a 2600 version of Miner 2049'er that the Super Pocket lacks.

  • 2 months later...

Just wanted to revive this thread. It came in the mail a week or so ago, and it's completely awesome. I love this thing!!! The cart in the back is actually just a shell... so the games are all actually built into the Atari-branded version of the Super Pocket (which just makes it that much cooler).

There's so many to choose from... but I wanted to ask a couple of questions... and just remember, these are my opinions, so they're not right or wrong. I'm not a huge fan of "platformers" other than RPG games. But I really liked the old Atari games, especially the 5200 and 7800 games. I liked almost everything from the NEC TurboGraFX-16, and also really liked early PC DOS games. I also like arcade games... but am generally not a huge fan of the Atari ST style of games that came out back in the day (don't hate me!!!).

Are there any specific carts that you guys would recommend that I get? I'm going to get the Flashback / Another World cart (for sure)... but are there any other ones you guys would recommend? I apologize and realize I'm asking you guys to do my homework for me... but just curious if there were any favorites that you guys maybe think are good that I might have missed?
