Atarivox on 7800?

Has the atarivox changed at all to make it actually fit in a 7800 controller slot? I got a 7800 to play 7800 and 2600 homebrew games but it seems like maybe I should get a 2600 just for homebrew and atarivox? But then some 7800 homebrews say the use atarivox too? Just confused I guess.

I do have a small DB9 gender changer that I plug into the front of the 7800, which makes plugging an AtariVox+ into it fairly easily.  You can also take it out of the case, which would make it fit.  There are several 7800 games that use the AtariVox, so getting a 2600 won't solve the issue there.  Also, if you can find a DB9 extension cable that will fit both in the 7800 connector and the AtariVox on the other end, that's another solution.  I'd really like to find good cables that fit in the 2600, 7800 and AtariVox so I can add those as an option in the store, as well as sell them separately.  I don't yet have an example of the new extension cable Atari makes to see if it works.  If it does, that would be great.

I can confirm that the new cables work. It takes a bit of wiggling them into the 7800 as well as, wiggling the AtariVox into the female end of the plugs, but they do work.

Btw, I also use a DB9 gender changer.

Thanks, that's good to know.  I need to get my hands on some of these to try them out, but I'm encouraged by what you wrote above.

Those are the same ones (or very similar) to what I have, and they work well, since they effectively extend the connector out a bit.  However, given how the 7800 controllers points are aimed down a bit, it can still be tricky to use an AtariVox in this nature.

This is true. The 7800 ports are  angled down a bit. Fortunately, my setup allows for this. That gender changer is always parked in port 2 of my daily driver 7800.

Btw, the new extension cables go into the 2600+ without much wiggle. Same with my heavy sixers and Sears Video Arcade II. Other light and 4 switch models seem to require a bit more finesse in getting the connector, connected.

Thank you. I'll look into getting one of those db9 adapters.

Edit: does this look correct?

😂 I purchased this for my dedicated Vectrex AtariVox (Vecvoice mode). I hadn’t considered trying it on my 2600 or 7800.👍

IMO, these are amazing consoles. Other than my 7800 daily driver, the Vectrex is my favorite console. Pictures don't do any of the gameplay justice and the games look even better when you add a UV light frame with UV overlays. Heck, the light frame even enhances most of the regular overlays. I waited a long time to find a Vectrex at a reasonable price and I'm glad I found one. I can't recommend these consoles enough. If you would have told 10 year old me that I would be able to play a true vector version of Asteroids at home, I would have never believed it.

Btw, just to get this thread back on track, I can also reconfirm that the "Vectrex" extension cable also works with the AtariVox. This cable fits really well with my 7800's controller ports as well as, the AtariVox. Thanks again for mentioning this cable @-Joe-

This is 100% what I do.  👍

Wouldn't a gender changer actually change the gender? You would need two of them. Female to female, and then a male to male to change it back...Or a female to male extender. :ponder:

Yeah, these things are commonly sold as "gender changers" when they are not actually doing that at all.  :D
