BassGuitari
This is my 7,800th post here on AtariAge, and I figure it's only appropriate that it be used to celebrate the Atari 7800! 😀 The 7800 was a system that actually took me a little time to come around to when I first got into collecting 25 years ago. That was early enough that I still thought the only classic systems I would get into were the Atari 2600, and Odyssey 2 and Intellivision (both of which I happened into on the way to getting a 2600, and fell in love with). There were a couple of other systems calling out to me a little bit, like the Atari 5200 and DINA (I saw it in an issue of EGM and thought it looked really cool), but for some reason the 7800 wasn't on my radar as much. At first. My girlfriend (now wife) got into collecting with me a little bit, and at some point she bought a 7800. I can't recall that I was "impressed" by it, per se, but it was fascinating to see this sort of alt-console I never knew about while I was growing up with the Nintendo. I do remember thinking it was jarring but also kind of charming and quirky how mismatched the 2600 sounds were to the improved graphics. And we had fun with it, especially after we started getting more games for it. I had quite a few marathon sessions of Galaga and Xevious; Rampage was kind of a funky port but it seemed impressive for an Atari game; Ms. Pac-Man was the best version I'd seen for an 8-bit console at that point. (The Tengen version for NES later topped it, but it's nevertheless a great version.) I even liked Pole Position II, even though it didn't strike me as pack-in material. And it was handy being able to play our 2600 titles, too. (My wife played more Circus Atari on it than any 7800 game! 🙃) The 7800 definitely grew on me, especially as I picked up titles like Dark Chambers, Midnight Mutants, and Basketbrawl. My collection of original titles is nearly complete (albeit loose); I think I'm only about a half-dozen games away. Regrettably, I can't keep up with all the homebrews, but it's incredible to see the second life the 7800 has taken on in the last 20 years--I certainly couldn't have imagined it back in 1999 or 2000!

+GoldLeader
Although the times and dates, and numbers are different; Your initial post is pretty much my Atari 7800 experience in a nutshell. I think of the Atari 7800 as a 2600+; heh...As it will do all 2600...PLUS it will do 7800 (which is souped up in comparison), but it will also do 2600 homebrews (themselves like a 2600+ in my mind) and 7800 Homebrews (which I consider a 7800+)...
+bent_pin
I got a basically brand new 7800 near the end of 86. The guy who sold it at his yard sale got it for his kids but they wanted an NES instead. He was just looking to unload it and the games, so I got it for $20.

What games did you get and do you still have it?

No, most anything of mine of value was sold without my consent before I turned 18. Rough story.
KrunchyTC
I didn't even know the 7800 existed until 2002 when I was 14. I saw it at friends place in there living room. It intrigued me for sure. The games I played at the time were Double Dragon, Donkey Kong, and Commando. I wanted to do some research on it, but info at the time seemed scarce. I discovered AtariAge that year, sadly, it took me 20 years to finally visit the forum lol Fantastic console!
+Karl G
Congrats on 7800 posts! Well, phooey. I missed 2600, and I have a long way to go to 7800 posts. I just need to post a bunch of inane stuff that no one cares about to catch up (just like now, but more frequently).
