Atari 7800+ announced, along with 10 new games and 2 new controllers

The arcade's difficulty ramping is designed to eat quarters, and the game is tedious because it gets insufferably difficult way too quickly.

I can respect that. I have similar feelings over Centipede. Those Williams arcade games are just magic to me and pick them everytime. Defender, Stargate and Robotron are equally quarter munchers. But the sound and graphics are just outstanding. Let's not forget the Joust font too.

I am trying to figure out what units to take with me to eJagfest.

7800 PAL + HDMI adapter:

- NTSC games leave garbage at the bottom of the screen

7800 NTSC + HDMI adapter:

- one game has weird framerates and the HDMI adapter says "no signal"

2600+:

- no paddle support for my new HDMI game

The choice is clear.

- the 2600+ shows all games

- the 2600+ shows both PAL and NTSC games without artifacts.

- no bulky power supply, no cables, no power adapter

- games can be switched from the thumbwheel on the cart

- I might even code in a select option to run the paddle game with joysticks.

Please fix the paddle emulation for the 7800+. Having just one console leaves room for more games in the luggage.

Looks awesome! What games did you bring to show off?

Atari had loads of carts already. I bought 2 of the first 7800+ units off the production line (no serial number!) along with Bounty Bob, Caverns of Mars, Berserk and Frenzy.

I had a really great time today and met lots of AA posters in real life!

This looks so neat with no cables.

Hmm... What about wireless paddles as well?

Wireless all the way for me.

Paddles. It's an interesting one, but has some complications, firstly 2600+ Paddle resolution and jitter needs to be improved to 7800+ level, I still don't know if we can do this. Secondly, it's two paddles to one dongle, I'd need to work with the factory to see how they'd be able to do it. Lastly, if the two points above are solved then I think we'd need a wireless paddle pack to be something special as selling them solus might not be attractive enough to shift enough units to warrant them, perhaps they'd need to be released alongside or bundled with a new paddle game.

Plus, paddles aren't configured yet with 7800 games, so that would need to be done with the 7800 emulation.

Jeez after writing all that, strikes me it's an uphill struggle, as much as I would love to see it  😅

Not uuuuup North either 😉

In November the Centre for Computing History in Cambridge hosts the annual Retro Computer Festival on the 9th and 10th. It will be a good show for your credit card, because it is primarily a demonstration convention, not a "sales" convention 😉

Together with my friends of the Dutch "Atari Invasion"-team we will be there as an exhibitor to bring some Atari to the party 😃

It does not sound so complicated just send something like:

button

1 - button pressed

rotation

0..200 - rotation value of paddle

It is just 2 bytes to send per paddle that you spam all the time. You also need to send the paddle_id I assume.

The screen is just 160 pixels wide so 200 is plenty for resolution.

A simple potentiometer and an rc-circuit similar to the 7800 hw would produce good results.

The code in the 7800 to read paddles is just

*VBLANK = 0; // start charging the capacitor
Y1 = 200;
do {
    strobe(WSYNC); // 3 cycles
    if (*INPT0 & 0x80) break; // 7 cycles
    Y1--;
} while (Y1); // Looping 5 cycles
*VBLANK = 0x80; // purge the charge

The same could be created on a simple micro-controller.

Jitter is always a problem in any mechanical sensors.

You could think about the new value of the paddle as a magnet. You place the new value somewhere and let the sent value tug towards it with a realistic speed. In case of jitter the magnet jumps back and forth but the sent value appears realistic.

It is not rocket science.

Oh wait! It is actually rocket science used in drones and many other applications.

Progress!  The 7800 Rampage cart which had troubles reading on the 2600+ at last year's PRGE had no problems on the 7800+ at this year's PRGE.  The wireless 7800 controller is nifty too (and just to dispel rumors..the harmony cart pictured is in single game development mode with a 4K game...that loads fine too)

Rampage runs fine on the 2600+ too when you upgrade it to the latest firmware 😉

Great port to the 7800. Personally thou, I think the Sega Master System port is closer to the arcade..

I've been to gaming conventions in Manchester and Blackpool.

Although not a convention, and no games for sale, if you want to play classic arcade and console games Bury is the home of Arcade Club, which is now quite famous, it's been around for years. It's a really good day out and serves food and alcohol too.
