What are you all planning on doing about the "extra" stuff usually printed on TI Keys?

i have been studying options, i was thinking of looking into doing something like this, but where to get the custom set of decals printed, we basically need 16 white symbols, and 3 colored dots.

https://hackaday.com/2021/06/12/waterslide-decals-for-wingding-keycaps/

The other way is to get some good white or black paint, and hand draw the symbols on our keycaps.

or if we had a compatible old ti99 keyboard, reusing the existing keycaps, but then we need to 3d print adapters like been done for the new mitsumi keyboards that @visrealm designed.

i am open for good suggestions or thoughts on this matter.

that was one of the complains about the 8bitdo retro c64 looking new keyboard, it didn't have any of the graphical artwork from the c64 keys.

has anyone in the c64 world, came up with a simple way to do their keycaps, maybe we can adapt their way of doing custom art on their special keys.

Started working on my case this weekend.  I was hoping to have it done, but life got in the way.

We'll all I need to do is get the back and the top done.  The top is going to take a bit more planning as I have to design a cartridge rail system i think to keep the cart lined up while being inserted.  Hoping to have the case done by end of next weekend.

For everyone wanting to know, I have designed, and 3D printed various supports that you can see in the photos to tie all sides of the case together.  I still have a few to make.

I have designed the case large enough to be able to fit the power supply as well as using one of my PCB adapters I designed for this that allows one to plug in say a speech synthesizer or other side card peripheral directly on the motherb boards IO header.  I have already tested it with a speech and TIPI 32K combo being used.  Using external power for the TIPI of course.

I have also designed grom port extender that I will be using that will bring the cartridge port up an additional 20mm or so.

The outside of the case is made 100% of black cast acrylic, which is great for laser cutting and engraving as you can see.  The acrylic is not cheap, but it works great, and it is plenty thick enough.  This particular acrylic is a bit over 3mm thick.

Here are a few photos.  Did not take a photo of the right side as there is nothing there to see besides the side, no ports, etc..

Chris, on the power supply wiring here, where did you get the plugs that plug into the mean well supply? Do you have part numbers for all of them? I'm ready to run my first tests on these two boards and need to wire them up. The Datasheet for the Mean well states that the AC input is a JST B3P-VH or equivalent, the DC output is JST B8P-VH. Did you get a kit and crimper from a special source?

Yeah, decals are probably the best way to go. The DIY method does limit you to light colored keycaps though, unless somebody has a printer that does white ink. Although, in theory, you could spraypaint the front of the keycap white, and then print a mask in black-on-translucent. That might work.

I bought them via Digikey as Mouser did not have them in stock.

These wires will work with them too: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/jst-sales-america-inc/ASVFSVF14K305/6009489

Okay then the plug kit I bought from Amazon will do the trick. I'm just going to have to order some 14 AWG wire as I ordered the wrong size, 18AWG.

Thanks, now about  the keyboard firmware for the atiny13, where do we download that from? I can't find it in the github files.

It's not assembled. You need the files in this directory:

KeyboardFirmware

And then Dan used PlatformIO as his IDE.

I haven't got around to setting up my development environment yet to assemble it.

Okay, I understand, I have those files, just didn't see anything that looked like a loadable binary. I'll hjave to wait till I get some bandwidth. Only have hotspot on my phone right now and it's slow. Thanks Gary.

I had Dan put up a hex file for the keyboard firmware a couple of weeks ago on his github site.

Ah, so that's why, I had downloaded the github stuff just prior to starting this project, didn't check back since all his stuff stopped on it 2 years ago. Thanks.

I received my PCB order from the fabricator today.  In it there is the new V2 of the Unicorn board (still needs to be tested), the new 99/22 IO Port expansion boards, one has 5 additional female card edge connectors to expand J12 and the other board only has 4 + 1 male 44 pin card edge for things like the Speech synth to plug onto.  These also need to be built and tested..

  • 2 weeks later...

Do we have the binary or what ever needs to be loaded onto the Unicorn board? All I sse in the github archive is the platform IO information. Right now I do not have access to good internet to download and install VSCode and Platform IDE stuff. I am hotspoting oof my phone with 5 gigs of monthly data.

There is no binary for the unicorn board.  It has to be compiled via visual studio code and uploaded.

I will be making a guide to get that done next day or so (hopefully).

Looking at the 99/22 keyboard:

And a TI Keyboard:

We have:

It might take two or three sheets, but I think I can get the keyboard overlays I need here:

I think, with this:

https://keyoverlay.com/modifier-and-function-keys-stickers-for-keyboards-extended-version

and this:

https://keyoverlay.com/united-states-and-united-kingdom-keyboard-layout-on-black-background-us-uk

Will get things real close, but I'm open to better options.

I had custom keycaps created that has the special symbols on the keys as well, not the front of the keys but top left corner.  I ordered mine from https://www.maxkeyboard.com
