Need advice on hooking up intellivision to old tv

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

Someone reached out to me trying to hook an intellivision to an old TV. He tried various hook-ups with no luck including original switch box, direct coax adapter, etc. I asked what back of TV looks like. He sent me this Pic. Just an antenna input, nothing else. Can an intellivision be hooked up?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I just purchased these from Amazon.

Push it on to the Intellivision and then get your standard co-ax cable to connect between the TV and console.

He already tried that (direct connect coax). It didn't work because there is no coax input on tv.. Just an antenna input, which is not the same I guess. (I've never seen this port on a TV. Not sure there is a hook-up for it).

The antenna I put looks to be a coaxial jack, so that is where it goes.  Is he saying that a coax plug won't fit in that jack?

Yes.

I'm thinking he might just need this push-on adapter... like on some of the old game switch boxes?

That's coaxial.  Maybe he needs a coax plug with no screw-on threads?

Looks like the threaded connector on the filter is attached to the TV in the third picture. Is the connector on the TV not threaded? These F-connectors have been on North American televisions since at least the early 1980s and still are.

They have to have a way to tune to channel three or four on the TV. I don't think the filter should cause a problem but they can try without it.

I've never used the an LTE / 5G filter.  You've probably already tried it, but I'd recommend removing it from the equation.  Just take the black RCA cable from the Intellivision, connect it to the RCA-to-F-connector adapter, and screw the F-connector onto the TV's antenna.

The push-on connector is unlikely to change anything.  It should behave the same as the RCA-to-F-connector above.

I could be wrong but in looking at the pics, it appears that the ANT input on that TV doesn't have threads and is smooth? So in that case, the push on connector is likely the first option.

Yeah, I think he just pushed it on.. but the TV male end looks to not have threads from what I can see.

F-connectors without threads are meant to work with F-connectors with threads. Male connectors on the cable and female on the TV. Never seen one on a TV without threads. What make is the TV?

Interesting.  I've never seen nor even heard of a TV existing with a smooth antenna connector (in North America).  I kind of saw it but just presumed the smoothness was due to image compression artifacts.  That is really bizarre to see.

Anyways, the push-on connectors recommended above should do the trick.

I just edited my last reply, I found the TV on ebay and it has a clear pic of the Ant input and it is indeed a threaded type. So it should just work. I'm wondering since the TV is a DVD/VCR combo if it is stuck in some mode that is only accepting input from that source and not the antenna?

I agree.

I'm not sure what he's doing but you watch... he'll probably email me back and say Oops! I forgot to turn remote to Ant. or Aux.!.. lol 😆

You'd know if it's on TV mode rather than DVD or VCR if it shows a picture full of static. They still have to tune to channel three or four.

Yes, but until I looked up the model number it hadn't even been told to us that it was a combo TV and DVD/VCR unit. So it has to have input selectors on it to swap and depending on how it works, it may not show anything on the ANT input unless it has a signal. My wife's old JVC in our spare room will only show status on the channel for a sec or two and then go to a black screen. If you then plug in or change the channel, it will then display the picture just fine.

Again, I was only trying to find out what I could and provide some assistance.

The individual with the hook-up issue has figured it out. All working good now!

He switched to a different tv & all worked as it should.

Must have been an issue with that models connections. I never liked those all in one tvs. Too many things could mess up.

Thanks again everyone!
