swiller
Success! Pitfall II now works with a new socket and r3 experimental firmware. I believe the Activision carts read better overall. My notes after going through the installation: Agree you'll need to take out all the black plastic screws and unassemble everything. You can probably pull the ribbons out gently, as I saw no bar to release once I took the IO board out. The hardest part is putting the new socket in. I think this is why you need to take all screws out. Get a good magnetic screwdriver. I almost stripped 2 screws and putting the screws back in through the board required it. I left one screw out until I get one myself. Mistakes I made was not putting the the top grey board on before seating the new i.o. board. Also, I did need to take out the black screws a second time to get the new socket in. Pay attention to the new Pro Tip: added to directions. I believe it is a requirement for success. I am grateful for the stellar support provided here @Ben from Plaion @Trebor @Fred_M and a big fan of the new Atari. I will back new products and games coming out. Cheers! 🍻 Edited October 22 by swiller 7 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/371614-updated-cartridge-socket-giveaway/page/16/#findComment-5552984 Share on other sites

MrChickenz
Success!!! After swapping out the board, thanks to @Ben from Plaion. I swapped the LED for a color changing LED, thanks to @CPUWIZ. Pitfall II works great! Strategy X was my problematic cart but with the grip of the new cartridge slot it’s not problematic anymore!!! Thanks to @Fred_M for the instructions. And his suggestion to remove all screws from the front panel. It definitely makes it easier to assemble everything again! Another Pro Tip: Listen to Journey Escape while swapping out the boards! Lol. Also thanks to @Treborfor updating the instructions! HAVE YOU PLAYED ATARI 2600+ TODAY? 8 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/371614-updated-cartridge-socket-giveaway/page/16/#findComment-5555607 Share on other sites
IPAWS
Is there *any* way the rest of us can get hold of an updated board at the moment? And where can I get one of those color-changing LED's? 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/371614-updated-cartridge-socket-giveaway/page/16/#findComment-5555609 Share on other sites

spork
I also wanted to say thank you to Ben for providing me replacement screws. My Berzerk enhanced cart for some reason does not seem to be working. I have the current r6 firmware along with the current dumper. The cart worked before but maybe? I remember having a bit of trouble with it on the old slot. the 10in1 and 4in1 seem to work fine as do most other carts. I've tried powering off and re inserting the cart with the console powered on. screen flashes black a bit and had also heard a frozen sound glitch. Not sure if this could be something I did like the positioning of the slot from the new board or maybe the cart is faulty? Im not sure when but I might be able to try it on a friends atari. Berzerk should play without issue. Faulty carts are very rare, almost none existent. Would you mind sending it to me to look at I'll send you a new copy back. 2 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/371614-updated-cartridge-socket-giveaway/page/16/#findComment-5555976 Share on other sites

Thank you Ben - that's great to hear! I'll definitely keep an eye out for them. And thanks for looking out for the ATARI community like you do. Very appreciative of that. There I was thinking I'd need to go out and get a revision 2 of the 2600+. Not so! 👍 Well, some of the pins on my cartridge connector are starting to look pretty bad. I’ve managed to straighten most of them, but I think I’ll need a replacement soon. I just hope the shipping costs for the part won’t be too high. Living in Europe, I’ve never been able to bring myself to buy anything from the AtariAge store because of that 😩 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/371614-updated-cartridge-socket-giveaway/page/16/#findComment-5556311 Share on other sites

Plaion has distributors all over Europe and Atari is "officially" French, so there must be a way to make this happen 😉 I live in an EU country, I would be happy sending the new cartridge connectors to people in EU countries if no other solution can be found. 6 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/371614-updated-cartridge-socket-giveaway/page/16/#findComment-5556378 Share on other sites

nicksterwixter
Now that I have a small collection of games, I can see what everyone else is saying: That R1 cartridge slot does not seem to love those Activision games 😂 Pretty much all of the other games I have plug and play just fine, but the 3 Activision games I own (Pitfall, Keystone Kapers, River Raid) all need some jiggling in the slot to get tho work. The same goes for my Coleco Donkey Kong Jr too. Very excited for the R2 upgrade to hopefully make things nice and smooth 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/371614-updated-cartridge-socket-giveaway/page/16/#findComment-5557919 Share on other sites

It worked for around 6 months then stopped from one day to the other; could not get it playing on any machine any more. +-^CrossBow^-
So after having done a few of these board swap-outs now, I feel I've got a pretty good method that while it does still requiring having to basically more all of the screws. It isn't that big a deal on getting it all together if know the process. Is there any interest in having me do a video on the board swap out process? Not sure how many folks would still need this, but I supposed if boards are made available separately in the future, the process would be the same then as now? 12 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/371614-updated-cartridge-socket-giveaway/page/16/#findComment-5561371 Share on other sites

I have done two, and tips have been shared on here, but I would say yes, please do share, it will help others who buy the board from here in the future. All input on this is welcome as I am sure differnet methods have been used and some may find one easier than another. 2 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/371614-updated-cartridge-socket-giveaway/page/16/#findComment-5561752 Share on other sites

Well what I can do is swap out the original board back into my 2600+ and go through routine I use. But it really isn't that tough. You do need a #2 phillips for the four main case screws. And then a number 1 or 0 phillips that is magnetic to get the rest of them. And initially you have to remove all 20 of the smaller screws that hold everything in place since the switchboards from the original have to be brought over. But you can attach the switch boards to the new main board with one screw to at least hold them and their retaining brackets in place enough. Doing all of this allows the entire front plate to come off and allow the entire assembly to be removed and installed easily. So yeah I will see about trying to create a short vid of the process this weekend. 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/371614-updated-cartridge-socket-giveaway/page/16/#findComment-5561854 Share on other sites

Thankfully, knowing that Albert will be getting stock of them for sale at some point does give me some relief that I’ll be able to upgrade my two regardless of whether I catch the next giveaway or not. 👍🏼 2 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/371614-updated-cartridge-socket-giveaway/page/16/#findComment-5562098 Share on other sites
