Any Ideas for Atari Plus Platforms? Post them here!

Thank you, Ben, for saying #2 will never happen!  For me, it would ruin the nostalgic enjoyment of the machine.  If I want to play a ROM, I have Stella on my laptop.  I bought the 2600+ solely for sentimental and nostalgic reasons.  There's just something nice about swapping cartridges that I like.

…The strategy employed so far with all the 2600+ and 7800+ lines is in my opinion the only way to go to ensure a continuing pipeline. It's consoles, accessories and probably above all,  games. They sell just enough at the moment to keep it all going into the projects third year.

Slow and steady wins the race for sure!

I’m happy with the release cadence we’ve gotten so far. Plenty of new games, console improvements, and at least another year of releases to look forward to. It’s a great time to be a retro gaming fan!

2) Adding an SD card slot / USB port for firmware updates without the need of a PC, and playing games off it (most likely not gonna happen).

I appreciate the frankness in the answer even if I'd prefer the opposite response.   :(

I want the Atari Video Music+

I would also like an updated advert with @Ben from Plaion modelling these glasses.

If you don't know what it is then skip to around 17:30 if you just want to see it in action.

And as it's Monday, this seems appropriate:

It's already been reimagined too, look here. Same guy I know. 🤣

Yes that one is on my collectors list too. I know 2 people in The Netherlands who have one, sadly I am not one of them 🤣

Oh yeah! I miss all that funky visualizers in music apps.

Let‘s make this an Atari VideoMusic & VirtualLightMachine Collection 😎

I bet Atari is willing to release a music player software for both PC and mobile that has the features of this. Doing a hardware Video Music would be a waste of money and...err...I hate to say it, but it probably won't sell as well as the currently Atari+ lineup. Sorry.

I was half-joking when I said this on the AA Discord but...
WE NEED AN FPGA ATARI CONSOLE SOON...maybe.

But seriously, @Eagle just showed me MiSTER Pi and it's under $100, which is batshit insanely cheap for an FPGA board.
Don't believe me? CLICK THIS LINK! lmao

While I am currently waiting for the Atari 7800+ to come around, I would totally kill for something like FPGA or whatever as long as the price is right for both me and the Atari managers. Maybe.

I really like the CX78+ gamepad and I’m sure I will also like the wireless one that I pre-ordered once it arrives.  The d-pad and buttons are the squishy membrane style which is fine, but while I was playing PacMan the other day, I couldn’t help but wonder if my experience would be more enjoyable if the tactile feel of the gamepad was more “clicky” and more like the microswitch style. Don’t get me wrong, the existing CX78+ gamepad is great, but a gamepad with a d-pad that has precise clicks would be ideal, I think. It could even have blue buttons in order to set it apart from the existing mushy button gamepad.

Since @Ben from Plaion is in the planning phase for 2025, I just wanted to get this idea out there.

What do you all think?  Would this be profitable for Plaion to develop another iteration of the gamepad or do you think not enough people would buy it?  Since they already released an affordable red button gamepad that is faithful to the original design, could this be something they charge a few extra dollars for if need be?

When I was watching the interviews about lightsynths in the Llamasoft collection I was remembering enjoying the one Minter did for the JagCD. I honestly think such a device: VLM hardware with Bluetooth, AirPlay 2 and analogue, TOSlink, Coax inputs and analogue/digital outputs, would be a worthwhile product. Maybe two products: a “Pro” separate with a higher price tag and a “Jr.” portable with built-in speakers or a small amplifier and ability to connect external speakers. Partner up with an experienced independent audio outfit and a good marketing campaign and it might be a hit. The kids seem to be into retro, so go for the original Atari music aesthetic with chrome knobs and wood grain like granddad’s old hi-fi 😁

Definitely more interesting than another hoodie or baseball cap 😉

The Plus line projects quality, so why not a wireless arcade stick with quality microswitched stick and buttons? Factor in dongles for USB and 9-pin serial and market it to use on computers as well. A deck with a paddle and spinner would also be groovy, but possibly too niche to justify.

I think that if the joypad was to evolve it should have more sweeping changes, as at that point it does not need to be true to the original any more.

For me with a 'CX79+', I would move the D-pad downwards to the centre, the buttons to the right and centred, closer together and make them raised for easier two button press functions. Have the cable come out of the shell in the centre too.

So OK, yeah, more like a NES pad, but still with the style, colours and materials of the CX78+.

I do like the CX78, but the changes I have mentioned here undoubtedly make it more ergonomic so if changes are to be made we might as well make a much improved controller.

EDIT:

At that point the silly stick could be ditched too. 🤣... or kept for you crazy people :P

Not a bad idea! It doesn’t have to be arcade quality, If it’s reasonable Atari 2600/7800 Quality and reasonably priced. I would love to see a combination compact 1 player wireless Joystick, Paddle and Trackball for the Atari 2600+ / 7800+. I would buy two! For two player competition! It would have to have a regulation size paddle knob like a CX30+.

Atari could call it the CX50+ All in one controller!

Taito makes these but it’s not all in 1

I posted this in a different thread but I thought I would post it here as well.

FALL DOWN

I just realized FALL DOWN is the perfect game to use my Red and Blue Button controllers with!
Just an idea, Atari could package a special CX 78+ Blue Button Controller with Fall Down! That would be cool!

Or package a CX 78+ Red Button controller and CX 78+ Blue Button Controller with FALL DOWN!

Or a CX40+ Red ButtOn Controller and a CX40+ Blue Button Controller with FALL DOWN!

I like these concepts.  The idea of optimizing the joypad. Atari/Plaion did a great job creating controllers that are true and faithful to the originals and I’m glad they did that, but it has been almost 50 years now and more is now known about game interface ergonomics, plus, as we all continue to age, we get arthritis (for example) and other issues that make an ergonomic input method all the more important. For me, the A+ platform is an evergreen product that I will be playing for decades to come (God willing), so ergonomics are increasingly important.

I second this idea as I never seen a microswitch style gamepad before!

This is something I would like to see return or a similar product! When I found out this was available it was no longer available.🙁

Unfortunately I never got one of these!
Sorry Atari!

Oh yes, something like this would be ace, though given it’s for Atari plus would only need a couple of buttons I suppose. Of course if it could do game select and reset that would be nice too 😁

The Egret II Mini seems pretty cool, shame I missed it; would totally have got one and the trackball add-on!

Or even just as simple as a Trackball and Paddle combo since there are many controllers to choose from this would be more cost effective. Wireless of course!

Again the paddle knob would have to be the size of a CX30+ paddle knob, anything smaller effects gameplay.

@Ben from Plaion do you see this! Maybe a similar design for the Plus Platform but different color scheme.

After some careful thinking, I come back to reality. The DB9 connector is only 9 wires so an all in one controller would be more complicated than it’s worth. So kindly disregard.😁

A Trackball would be Ideal since we do have controllers and paddles.🤞

The Multi Function 2002 by Micro-Händler was also DB9 and had a Joystick with two Buttons and two Paddles. They were switchable, so that would not be a problem
