Boulders and Bombs

New to me and the HSC :!: I like the other CBS games, this one from 1982 has a lowly 5.8 'mania rating but we'll see how it plays in 2024 :D

Well, I don’t have a prayer of making it to the high score list and the screen goes there immediately after death, but I got 6300 or something in that neighborhood. Interesting game! Pic of my setup attached 🙂

Boulders and Bombs: 35,020

Not the greatest game ever made, but decent enough. I've played it a few times in the past but don't remember too much about it. In fact, on my first playthrough, I forgot that you can detonate those bombs you pick up! Rotate the joystick clockwise quickly to light the fuse. Apparently, you can even blow up the big bird by bombing those rods it drops, but I haven't been able to do that yet...

According to the manual on Atarimania, this is one of the few four-player simultaneous games for the 8-bit computers.

We had this one on cart when I was a kid, we played it a bit but not our favourite game.

I'm not sure why the miners just seem to die randomly. They don't seem to get hit by anything, maybe I should look at the instructions

Had a couple of goes also need to read up as figured there is more to it than just getting across screen. Got to Quadrant 9 :!:

43,710

[Space] is pause, watch out for pressing fire to resume and accidentally toggling to the man and churning him at the start of the level ;)

Can see hall of fame by pressing one of Option or Select keys on title screen.

Maybe when night is over you are no longer alive :!:

Note: needed OS translator to get this working on my XE.

Round is shorter than usual so probably a good thing ;)

The review on atarimania (link on 1st post) is worth a read - the multiplayer bit allows control of the birds so we probably have it a bit easy for a 1 player game, will pay more attention next go to see if the computer moves them properly...

Any suggestions for the next poll - something different / thinking of a theme round perhaps

Welcome back guys

8510 pts without reading a single letter of the instructions. Maybe will improve later after reading what you should do and can do in the game.

"Rotate the stick to use the bombs" ;)

You were right about losing a life at the end of the night. This makes it very difficult when the screen is covered in boulders

Almost like they are trying to get you :D

How about a paddles round, or does that exclude too many people? I would have to check if my paddles are still working well

If the trojan Super Breakout wins the poll we can expand it ;)

94,910 am quite liking this one. You have three guys to start with (spotted extra man at 50k may be others) you guide them across the caves - when you only have one left then there is only 1 escape to complete the quadrant (level). The bonus is increased on each level :) Had a couple of deaths that I didn't spot but maybe green slime thingy. Game would be much harder with 2 of your mates dropping stuff on you as well as the 2 computer birdoes !

196730 - Quadrant 13

Finally had a good run, where I stopped making silly mistakes.  Got all the way to the 9th stage without losing a man, which meant lots of extra points.  I also carried at least two lives right up to the end.

Major difficulty spike around Quadrant 8 or so, when suddenly the sun/moon travels twice as fast.  It would usually take a full "day" just to dig a tunnel across the screen.  Combine that with any kind of enemy interference and you're usually just dead.  Not sure why the developers added this as the game gets hard enough just from the slow increase of rocks and enemy aggression.

Oh, and no bombs were used here.  That mechanic is total crap.  Even when I was able to use one, blasting a bomb was never useful at all.

I figured the bombs come in after making the tunnels on the later rounds, had a few more goes but didn't improve!

Final tables coming up...
